Sony F3 and 18-80 alura

Hi all

 

I've got a Job next week and we are shooting with the F3 and Alura18-80

They are also going to record onto the sound devices pix 240 Solid state recorder

 

The job entails hard mounting to a Polaris and shooting running stuff, and it involves quite rough terrain I've been told

 

Any advice or things I should watch out for with this camera setup? Anyone shot with the same setup?

Hi Richard,

 

The 18-80 Alura is a studio zoom, 10.4 lbs (almost 5kg). I would advise to get a lightweight zoom.

Yes, but camera itself is so light, that even with this zoom whole setup will most likely not exeed 12 kg, so not much to be afraid of...

I own the Aluras and we used them on my show last season with the F3. We shot with the 18-80 handheld with a fair amount of extra gear, although not a recorder (hard-wired back to DIT station where the recorders lived) but it was manageable, according to the operators. You'd still be at a "classic" weight range for Steadicam with that setup. You'll definitely need to use a baseplate so you can mount the dovetail under the CG which will be at least at the lens mount if not further forward.

 

So, no problem for the vehicle mount--but for the running stuff, you'd obviously be a lot better off with a prime or maybe an Optimo zoom, where you can take advantage of the light weight of the camera and be able to generate more speed or control. Saddling a light camera with a heavy zoom for running is a bit of a pointless gesture.

Thanks for the all the replies!

So we ditched the zoom and got a set of compact primes.

 

The rental house doesn't have the correct brackets/cages aks to mount the zoom properly without inducing a lot of flex and vibration. Since we hard mounting over ROUGH terrain not really a good thing.

 

So I put a weight under it and got it up to around the same an Alexa setup so I'm pretty happy

I've got a job coming up with the Arri Alexa on a TV show. The DP asked me if I could fly the Alexa with the Alura 18mm to 80mm zoom lense on my rig.

I fly a MK-V Evolution rig with a MK3a arm. Is this possible or just plain madness to try. Should I suggest an alternative?

Absolutely not! Lightweight Optimo or Zeiss zooms or primes. Just tell him you can't balance it on the rig or it's beyond the weight range of your arm (whether it is or not)

Thanks for the advice Lawrence. I'll try sell him the Optimo or the LW Zeiss. It'll make my life easier!
