Sam Morgan Moore Posted April 8, 2012 Report Share Posted April 8, 2012 Hello (posting in the newb section due to being about 'cheap' cameras) The newer DSLR and other mini cameras like the Nex7 seem only to have (generally mini) HDMI as an output for monitoring I think this is the case for both the Nikon D800 and Canon5dmk3 My Pilot which I have upgraded with a Transvideo daylight monitor is analogue Does anyone know of a 'black box' that could take the HDMI signal and output it as analogue ? You may be better off putting an HDMI monitor on your Pilot for DSLR shooting. You can run the HDMI cable off the front of the top of the rig to connect to the monitor below. I've done this with both Pilot and Flyer rigs. Running cables outside the post may be considered "old school", but if you set it up properly it won't interfere with your operating unless you have a need to shoot self-referential shots with the camera pointing back at yourself. The other benefit is that you'll have a high definition image on your monitor via the HDMI. Regarding the Decimator 2: I believe that it only has HDMI out, not in. Carl Thanks for clarifying the Decimator - as I thought It is possible to go HDMI - I have a DP6 - a nice monitor but no good in the sun My transvideo monitor is a proper daylight viewable and expensive unit Id prefer to stick with that - also I like for speed of set ups to have a dedicated monitor on my Steadicam while using another montior (the DP6) for Sticks and Shoulder shooting Having HD is (to me) of less value on a steadicam because we either dont focus or focus using preplanned marks and a puller who probably wont be on the monitor - neither system need an HD monitor Best SamMM Edited April 8, 2012 by Sam Morgan Moore Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...

I was directing you to a lower budget option as persons with Pilot rigs are frequently not inclined to make major accessory investments. Premium Members Charles Papert Posted April 8, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 8, 2012 That AJA won't do it, Fabrizio--that converts to HD-SDI or SD-SDI, which are both digital signals and Sam needs analog. There are a few brands out there that do this, including Atlona and TVOne, neither of which I can vouch for. Furthermore, one has to look closely at all "mini-converters" which often have reducer power inputs compared to the 14.4 or higher voltage that the Pilot emits--that AJA wants 5v, and many of the Blackmagic boxes like no more than 12v, so you have to use a specific voltage converter or (shudder) additional battery. You've painted yourself into a bit of a corner here Sam, as you will ideally want to be able to convert EITHER HDMI or HD-SDI to composite depending on the camera and as of now, unless someone can find otherwise, there isn't a simple one size box that does all. You'd be looking at a set of boxes, one to convert the HDMI to SDI and another to downconvert (with an SDI camera you'd just use the second box). BTW your zip tie gears are working great! Carl Cool I will check that box out Fair point about Pilot owners - mine is a kind of extreme version with that monitor and a HoFo - a little big rig -- A point came up on TwitterChat to 'correct' my first post - the Canon 5dmk3 appaerntly has analogue out like the 5d2 The D800 may not - and thats the camera I would prefer to upgrade my 5d2 from - it just got $500 more expensive!
