HDMI -> analogue

In simplest terms possible...

Analog video (in ascending order of image quality):

Composite (aka CVBS): usually a single RCA or BNC connector. Always SD.

S-video: special 4 pin connector, or two RCA's. Always SD.

Component: three RCA's or BNC's. Can be either SD or HD.

Digital video:

SD-SDI (not really a contender at this point)

HD-SDI: single BNC (two for 4:4:4)

HDMI: special connector, essentially a DVI signal with audio added

This is the same unit I have (same as the one from amazon but cheaper) I just made up a little power convertor that takes 12v to 5v. The power convertor actually lives in the box and has a 0B4 connector to the sled for power and video. An external power adaptor should be simple enough for you to put outside the sled.

Thank you CHarles and Anthony. Running out of posts for today !

My 5d gives out 'A/V' which is a lead going to three RCAs (1 picture plus 2 sound??) - which would make it Component?

But my monitor has one input CVBS - which would make it Composite

Yet they play with each other

So do I need a HDMI to Component or HDMI to Composite

A side point..

HD-SDI, Component and Composite all use BNC connectors of the same size yet wont work together

Clear .. as mud .. Wiki Time

:)

The 5D AV cable is composite video plus two audio leads. You can plug that cable directly into your monitor, with an RCA to BNC adaptor of course.

Generally composite video/audio cables are color coded with yellow (composite video) and red and white (audio). Component RCA's are generally green, blue and red (just for convenience sake--the cables themselves aren't different inside than composite cables).

While it is confusing that similar cables can carry different types of signals, it actually makes things a lot easier than carrying a bunch of different cables. You just have to read what the output is on the device. I'd rather take a BNC than an HDMI connector any day. Just got my 1D back from Canon repair, where they replaced the HDMI connector that had worked loose inside the body. Ugh.

Since your monitor is SD, no reason not to use the 5D's AV cable rather than go through HDMI to composite convertor. Same result. I've heard the picture quality isn't quite as good that way but for Steadicam purposes, close enough. For a camera that ONLY has HDMI output, the box Anthony listed looks good.

Indeed my 5d2 works fine been on the rig for years- Im thinking about upgrading it to anohter camera- it appears the 5d3 works fine too (which I didnt know this morning) and cameras like the D800 or Nex5/7 would need the box

Yep - I hate HDMI and like the BNC leads so that makes sense

In terms of my 5d I always use the AV lead because the HDMI is only 480px when rolling anyway and I prefer the better conection - its a sad day when a 1/4 jack is the better connection !

Other cameras - D800, FS100 look way better as they feed full 1080 from the HDMI

Over and out!

D800 - No analog video output. Space (Where the analog port was on previous Nikon cameras) replaced by headphone jack.

5D Mark III - Analog video output, shitty HDMI output. Still much better HDMI quality than Mark II. Based on playing with a Mark III about a month ago, maybe they fixed the video output.

If you're getting the D800, why not get a field recorder for the HDMI video. It's 1080i, but it's a lossless interlacing. I'd explain that, but I doubt that matters right now
