Transcoding devices record high speed/slow mo?

hey yall

 

i have been playing around with the SoundDevices PIX240 transcoding monitor and it only records the live feed through hd-sdi and will output about a dozen different frame rates and resolutions, but they are pretty set in stone and standard.

i am wondering if the ki pro (mini), gemini, nano flash, cinedeck or any other devices may record the cameras shooting speed, say 96fps, and output at something standard, say...23.98. this way i could drop a clip into fcp and see it playback at the recorded speed. I'm expecting that they don't, but just wondering. I've gone through some of the user manuals online and it doesn't seem to be a noted feature.

As far as I know the only way to do this is by playing back the shots you want in camera while the pix240 records it.

SMPTE standards are going to make what you want unlikely. It's really best to rely on the camera's internal codec/data stream if you want wacky frame rates. I was playing with the Sony FS-700 the other day and shot video ranging from boring 24 all the way to 940 FPS I believe it was. At the moment however it's limited to the regular SMPTE standards (24, 25, 30, so on) exported out of the SDI port.

 

EDIT: Here's the standards I mentioned earlier. Your recorder should say what SMPTE standard it is capable of recording, then just reference the chart here.

Nanoflash can be set to record 60fps (for playback at 24) at 720p, and 30fps at 1080p, I believe.

Like Sydney says. The HD-SDI standard has the ability to do the following: 24p, 25p, 30p, 50p and 60p

 

So long as you stick to those rates its possible to record the feed. Incidently the Wevi has similar issues with off-frame rate as you may have noticed when you go 33p and the image jutters.
