Advise on replacement monitor

I need to replace the stock monitor on my Broadcast Masters. Anyone have an opinion on which LCD monitors are high quality enough to focus on? I have a transvideo NTSC unit as a spare and it really isn't up to the task of focusing. HD ability would be a plus. Thanks!

A HD monitor would of course be nice to focus on, but it all depends on the camera you are using, generally.

If you shooting mainly film, the video-assists on most camera´s is of avarage quality and most LCD screens are fine.

If you shooting SD-video mostly, I think a Transvideo or a Teletest or such is ok as well.

If you are shooting HD mainly, than you are in trouble: there are only a few

HD-screens, that are not even really HD but more extended definition, meaning you can see about half the amount of line pairs on it as the camera sees.

The HD sign on these monitor means not much more than that the electronics in it can handle the signal, but it says nothing about the screen/pixels/lines

So your margin of error for focus is still there, though better than with the SD-screens.

However, there are only few -expensive - screens that have a light-output that is enough for Steadicam: Highbright from Tiffen and the Hummingbird/MK-V screen.

Thanks for the info. Mostly I'm shooting SD Video with perhaps 20% HD. The Transvideo I have now is "ok" for viewing, but focus is absolutely impossible to find during a live shot even with peaking at maximum. I'm hoping to find something sharper. I'll check out the two monitors you mentioned.

Just a short note: The Humming bird from MK-V is only one of the Hummingbird models. There are the plain Hummingbird (no frameline generator, no Lemo connector) and the Blackbird (with a FLG and Lemo). So if you are interested in Hummingbirds (they work wonderfully) you can get info about them not just from MK-V but from other vendors as well.

Additionall, the high brightness Transvideos are supposed to be very very good as well.

Hi Rob,

I checked the following link

http://www.transvideointl.com/pages/englis...w_2_monitor.htm

But I don't know where to buy it and the price. Do you know the price range for that product?

TIA

Regards

Leigh
