Low mode operation

use a full size professional rig and experienced op if you have the budget. LIghter rigs will not be as stabile. If lens is longer (not a bad idea with an animal to move it back from the vehicle) gyros may be useful.

add weight to the camera by taping on shot bags or mounting the camera in a low mode cage and attaching weights to the cage. A more robust cage such as that by baer bel is good for this. The Kawasaki Mule or eq. utility vehicle with a powerful gas engine will get you up to the speeds you'll need. Your'e right a golf cart will be too slow. Be sure the operator can rig a hard mount. Roll over speed rail is nice. Wind protection will make it work better also. Animals Arrghhhhe!!!!! Will it shy from the vehicle???? run under the vehicle????? Run while looking at you???? Probably the trainer will want to ride in the passenger seat so good wireless to the director is a plus.

Hope this picture comes thru. its a rig as above for a chase scene I did.Feel free to E mail tjsteadicam@qwest.net or call of site if I can help 206 769 8585

I don't think weight will be a problem for a big rig as you are presumably using a Mini35 adaptor for the DV cameras, plus the 10+ lbs of the Elites will bring you up to at least a 25 lb camera weight, similar to a good size ENG camera or loaded 16mm setup.

There is no good low-mode accessory for the Mini35 currently available, although I am working with the factory to develop one. In the meantime, you can always invert the rig, shoot with the camera upside-down and simply flop the image right-side up in post (I've done that many times, it works fine).

hey afs242 (what kind of name is this?)

pretty much everything i wnted to tell you was said by all the other fellow ops. you should use gyros if your going highspeed, the animal trainer should sit on the atw (quad, the suzuki is nice and they have one moved by a belt,so there´s no feeling of shifting gears.)

also youshould have the focus puller sitting onthe vehicle if you go over long distances.and have a very good driver!!!!!!!!it´s abit dangerous if hedoes not know a hundred percent how to drive.

you will have to hardmountthe rig. make sure there´s something to lean on for the operator! have done a shot like this for a doog food commercial, and forces are unbelievable.

hey charles:

There is no good low-mode accessory for the Mini35 currently available,

you shouldhave a look at baerbels low-mode cage ifyou have a chance.

i used it with 16mm,betacam,mini-dv ... and really worked fine.

since pretty much everything was said by the other guy

i wish you a good shoot with that dogs.the really can freak you out, especially when they keep running in exactly the direction where you

never wanted themto run

greetings

hey everybody !

i had this shoot yesterday that gave me some things to think about.

it was a diploma-film for a school with a dvcPro+-Pro35-Adapter an i had

to do loads of running(better than standing around in the cold november weather here in germany!)

after doing a lot of running in regular mode we changed to low mode to do some more running(to fast for walking backwards so it had to be don juan)

i had my superpost on the rig and everything went fine as long as we were just filming the actors feets while running.the the director wanted a frog perspective of the actors face.so i put my gimbal far enough down to get a drop time about 3 or more seconds, for not having to push the rig too much while running and looking in the actors face fom below ,at the same time.

as soon as i tilted the post this stupid heavy long camera started to roll ,and it was allmost impossible to keep it from looking at the ground .but i really wanted it to look at the sky.

i ended up running with both arms at the post, holding it like a spear!

we got enough seconds for that shot ,so it was allright but there must be an easier solution to that problem.Maybe doing the dynamic balance with the fully rigged low-mode rig? wold that help preventing the optic- and adapterweight to tend to roll in ground-direction?

any suggestions how to run a don juan with the camera allmost vertically pointing at the sky?????????

oh...,i also allmost had my first crash on this shoot while running with the camera facing sideways in a 90degree angle....but that´s a different story....

all the best to all of you

let me hear some comments

cheers

Hi Mathias, not many replies yet, huh?

Your problem with the rolling camera is probably related to the dynamic balance that was not there. But you cannot always get into that perfect balance, it depends on the gear you have.

Specially with those long camera construction there is a good chance that you are seriously out of DyBa.

The best solution would of course be a tilting head or cat-griller or such a wedge.

Luckely, when your shot is already so angled (from down or up) you do not have much relation to any level anymore, as a viewer. That gives some room to be off level without noticing.

Here is a shot from me doing low.mode on a couple, the man carries the girl on his back

Walking on a beach in soft sand, so I am sure my level was not always perfect but nobody noticed against the blue/white sky.

Dynamic balance on a modified efp? not really...

hey rob !

tank you for your reply! i didn´t think anyone would ever answer!

you are probably right with the dynamic balance problem.

i had to change a couple of things on the rig to do that shoot (move the monitor and some other parts ) and the rig definitely wasn´t in dynamic balance anymore. and,as you mentioned, the camera with the pro35 adapter was really long.

the tilting stage is a good idea, but they are quite expensive andno-one wants to sell them used (no wonder! it´s just a very nice piece of gear to have).

as you said,it´s all not so bad when you shoot against the sky.actually the pictures turned out really nicely.

hey, how´s the weather in thailand? definitely not as ugly as in good old germany!

hope you have a very good christmas ! all the best to you!

Hey guys,

I've only just got my hands on a universal low mode bracket and this is my first real test, I've tried it quickly before but taped what I did today, I've entitled it Casper Cam ... you'll see why.

I realise horizon goes a few times, and my abismal attempt at a "fly-over" doesn't work well, but there's four minutes here, no editing, just as-is. I think I didn't tighten the bracket tight enough either as there is a shake visible .. not so much on the streaming version.... will remember that for next time :)

Casper Cam

Thanks!

Jason

You had your shadow in teh shot quite a few times there.. i dunno....

No, but seriously. Looks like my first time in low mode! - You have a ratehr camera friendly dog! It'd be interesting to see some rehearsed shots.

What drop time you using for that?

Isn't low mode a bitch?

yea your takeoffs hava slight dip that looks like too fast a drop time? also might be useful to lower your monitor slightly so that you can look at the camera, when the dog is really close it will follow better to quick pan by pointing the camera rather than continuing to look into the monitor. Hey each one was a little better, nicely trained steadi dog!
