Thumbscrew for Bartech

Hey All

I have a Bartech and M-One set up. I was told that there is a way to control the receiver and motor from a thumbscrew that could mount on a handle for a traditional handheld (shoulder mount), one-man-band operation. I will be operating on a show for 2 weeks, in this fashion, with no AC. I'll have to pull focus myself, as I operate.

I have looked for this option online, but I can't seem to find any info on it...does anyone know where I can find something like this?

Well, for handheld I'd suggest a handheld follow focus, rather than a bartech.

Jim makes a "Gimbal mount hard wire focus module (plugs directly into receiver module)" for $100 (listed on Jim's website that could be used as easily with a handheld camera as on steadicam, i suppose. Though it's not really designed for on-camera focus pulls.

Even better might be a G-Zoom so long as you can mount it. I've heard great things about them for steadicam use.

There may be other systems I'm unaware of that are specifically designed for handheld and may be independent of a BFD. But I wouldn't think there's be much of a market, since a handheld follow focus would be so much cheaper. Heck, people use studio follow focuses all the time for handheld work. But for two weeks straight you'll want it as light as possible.

Thanks Brian. I did see the hard wire remote, but I guess I was expecting something wireless.

You may be right, though...a standard follow focus may be easier. I like the idea of having both hands on handles, though.

Hm...

Just wonder why you want wireless!

Does cable interfere your operation?

For handheld and pulling your own focus, I would pull focus directly at the lens with one hand while stabilizing the camera at the same time together with the other hand.

This way is much better than the 2 hands "mantis" holding style.

No FF needed, lighter set up.

Cheers,

Ken Nguyen.
