Premium Members Claus Stuhlweissenburg Posted June 14, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 14, 2012 Just curious to see what most operators are using to record footage from and HD camera. I've seen the Atomos Ninja and black magic. Wondering hat else is out there and what others prefer
Premium Members William Demeritt Posted June 14, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 14, 2012 I've got the Atomos Samurai, and I've had some great luck with it. They're improving the software for it frequently.

Hey William, Interested on your thoughts regarding the Samurai, how do you find the batteries that come with it, will two generally get you through the day? Or do you power it from the rig? Also how do you mount it, to the camera or to the rig? Thanks in advance James

Premium Members James Davis Posted June 15, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 15, 2012 Hey Eric, Just curious, how do you mount yours and power it? Looks a bit awkward to mount with the batteries hanging off the back of it... Thanks
Premium Members William Demeritt Posted June 15, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 15, 2012 James, I have velcro on the two 7.4V batteries that come with it, and velcro on my recorder mount on my PRO2 base. I just stick it on the velcro with the BNC ports facing the post. I operate normal, so the screen faces "away" from me, but when I'm docked I can watch playback on the screen. I'm considering figuring out another solution for mounting, possibly a clamp to the post that has a 1/4-20 screw, but I fly with a short post as often as possible, so I don't have much mounting space. The batteries generally get me through a full day, and then some. One feature I use regularly is the screen lock/disable. With the newer firmware (I think past 2.8), you can press the power button (short press) to lock the screen and disable the display. It still records, but the screen remains off. Once they get the record trigger over HD-SDI working for most cameras (it's still hit and miss), you can just attach the device, power it on, turn off display and only turn it back on if you need to review a take. They're also supposed to start shipping the P-tap to dummy battery terminal any day now, I'll consider that for powering it. In the mean time, those 7.4V Sony batteries are available on Amazon for like $10-15 a pop, and I can squeeze a full day out of them. Only problem is the weight they add. As it stands, I do not run video from camera to the Atomos then to my sled monitor (for fear of cables shorting out, Samurai dropping signal for some reason, etc). I need to make an HD-SDI capable switcher box so I can feed my Cinetronic monitor 1 HD-SDI line, but have it coming from a box with 2 sources on a switch so I can watch playback from the Samurai on my sled monitor. Chris Callarman
I am using the Hyperdeck Shuttle 2. It has worked well for me so far, and the low price is a plus. It would be cool if it had a menu and more options like the ability to delete a clip, but other than that, no complaints.
