Body Harness

As far as harnesses for vehicle work I am a fan of simple positioning belts. Something like this: http://www.grainger.com/Grainger/TITAN-Body-Belt-3RZX9?Pid=search

They are more comfortable than a climbing harness and actually OSHA approved (simple climbing harnesses are not. For fall protection they require full body). Its no good for fall protection but great for keeping me from being thrown off a vehicle. Also the side loops are actually rated for anchoring too while the ones on most climbing harnesses are not.

Amazing photos!

I am seriously impressed by the one under the truck. Was that scary? Intrigued by the handheld / Pro-Arm setup you are using in the image with the motorcycle helmet and I suspect in an earlier photo; would you mind telling us more about this camera platform on a pro-arm albeit off topic?

That hanging truck shot.... Amazing! Big balls man!

Jess, good find on the stronger daisy chain setup. I am going to go with that because I now no longer have confidence in my daisy chain. I see your double loop belt. I want a full harness though as would hate the whip lash from an emergency break especially considering the weird body positions we get into whilst operating. I agree with always anchoring in two places left and right otherwise it seems silly.

What is current thinking with quad bikes? do you wear a harness or not at all? and if so where are you anchoring? I tend to wear one but anchored nice and low. I've heard both (with and without) be suggested, argument being that a quad rolls easily and you want to be thrown free, and I wonder if there is a more recent considered opinion.

i had a few more but im at my photo upload limit..... ive probably used it to save my live hundreds of times and maid my mortgage payment hanging in it for hundreds of hours. it's a good harness.

Hard to dispute the quality of the harness after seeing those photo's

On a separate note - did you consider a remote head for those hanging shots ? Particularly the under truck one.

Under the truck we were only going like 20-30 mph and it was really the other vehicles doing the crazy driving part, the semi just drove straight. Could have used a remote head if we had one. The story boards called for a hard mounted camera and when I saw the action (one car on each side) I thought a whip from one car to the other would be cooler. It took me less than ten minutes to rig for the shot and I was done shooting it in 20. It would have taken a good remote head tech more time than that just to set up the camera.

As for the arm car rig thing, it's called a HyperCam. You can see some stuff I've done with it on my web site: miamidp.com. It's the first link on 'recent work'. With any luck the HyperCam plate will be available for sale soon (we are currently machining a gen 3 plate with newer cooler handles) and are planning on selling them.

Glad you liked the photos, thanks!

Thats true ... its certainly faster than rigging a head ...

Hypercam looks like a very cool bit of apparatus and your work with it is fantastic, I guess the risk is in the same league as being on any tracking vehicle and operating.

Under a truck, I think it kinda goes beyond crazy in my opinion, not judging you or anything as it's your life and what not.... but I know what my response to that request would be and lets just say it rhymes with truck and cough...

I Have a pair of pants with industrial strength velco on them, a little bit on the seat of the vehicle and I'm good to go. But if you want something more practical, the Petzl harnesses are the way to go. I use this one. It's not amazingly comfortable, but it gets the job done.
