Hi, I?m wondering if anyone has ever or knows of anyway to mount a steadicam to a snowmobile. I?m suppose to cover a ski race, as well as a possible snowmobile race, and I?m wondering is there anyway to mount the steadicam safely to it? and is it dangerous. The only thing I?ve ever been warned about was water and boats, so I was wondering can it be done? Any thoughts?

Dear Patrick:

I had a very bad experience with snowmobiles a few years ago. Because there is so much vertical force I had to build a cage and securely strap myself to the rig. When the vehicle goes over bumps the steadicam can be very hard to hold on to. In my case I was using a Vistavision camera so it wasn't very heavy.

It worked well for a few takes down a ski run. . . then a couple with a dog walked into our path from behind a tree line. The snowmobile was going pretty fast and we swerved to avoid the bogies - result was a roll onto our side. I had to use the camera as an outrigger to keep from continuing the roll. If the machine had rolled all the way over onto me it would have been a very bad thing.

I have no desire to try doing this again. If you do this job, make sure to insist on a great snowmobile driver. . .and as always with vehicle mounts, start with slow rehearsals and gradually pick up speed.

Gents--

I would suggest that instead of a snowmobile try to have production rent a UTV such as the Polaris Ranger 4x4 or a Kawasaki Mule that have been modified with tracks.

Yes, Viriginia, they make aftermarket add-on track assemblies which maintain the overall vehicle height, although some add a couple of inches, but add tremendous traction and stabilty due to the increased ground contact surfaces.

These machines also float through the snow whereas most sleds will tend to bog down somewhat due to the load carried.

Neal is spot on about the forces involved and how the rigging must be constructed.

A snow machine rollover at "race" speeds would ruin your whole day.

These machines are fabulous to ride as a solo rider, even two-up on a long track machine but not the best platform to shoot from.

Check into the UTV class and check the various manufacturers such as Polaris, Kubota, Kawasaki, John Deere.

These are larger machines but are better equipped to deal with this shooting situation.

Best,
