Evrim KAYA
Hello everyone! Again, I have I question about Ultra2. This time it’s about “battery rod weights” (800-7617). I saw these items on U2’s manual as well as on Clipper’s manual under recommended accessories but I couldn’t find them on Tiffen site. Did anybody use them before Tiffen stopped selling them? Why Tiffen stopped making them? How should one proceed to make them? How are they fixed into the rods; are there threads at the end fixing the weight rods to battery cradle? Any vibration issues from weight rods moving up and down within battery rods or is it a precise snug fit? The idea of putting weight within the battery rods seems very clean on paper but I’d like to have your ideas/experiences about them before making a pair at my machinist. Thank you. Premium Members Philip J. Martinez SOC Posted July 1, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 1, 2012 I have a set of them. I sometimes forget they are in there. I only take them out if I have a really light camera on top. I'd call the Factory and see it there are any left. They have a female threaded hole that screws into a male screw on the inside of the rods. there is no play what so ever.
Evrim KAYA
Thank you for your reply Philip. Do you have ultra or ultra2? From your images on your profile, I saw an ultra. Is there any difference between two about the subject at hand? What I fail to understand is how few threads at the very end of the weight rods prevent play at the other end? It seems to me that the other end should bounce off the inner walls of the battery rods unless coated with some kind of plastic to achieve snug fit. I’d like to make them myself at my machinist to have to option of lengthening them. So I’m more looking for exact technical description (rod diameter, thread size and such). Premium Members James Puli Posted July 1, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 1, 2012 Steve Fracol makes or used to make a weight plate for the bottom dovetail on the U2 sled.... From memory ..... To help guys keep the post shorter. Otherwise I have seen guys put an extra battery on the bottom of the sled as well! Even if it's just for dummy weight and isn't wired in to the rig. Hope this helps! JP
Premium Members Philip J. Martinez SOC Posted July 1, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 1, 2012 I had a clipper 24 and now have an ultra 2. They fit snugly into the ultra 2 battery rods with zero play. When I used them with the Clipper 24 I added camera tape around then th make a snug fit
Evrim KAYA
Thank you James for your input, I actually ordered IDX battery plate to put down the sled. But I only want to use it occasionally, when I need extra power or when I need to overly increase the mass. By using bottom dovetail to increase mass you also get increased volume which I don’t want unless I have to. You also lose the ability to use table tops or horizontal surfaces as docking options when the stand is away. Premium Members Alfeo Dixon SOC Posted July 2, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 2, 2012 my mod added battery power to the sled via Fracol's plate using an IDX Battery mount -Alfeo
Evrim KAYA
you're right Alfeo. Fracol s system is cleaner than the weight rod system.
Premium Members Alfeo Dixon SOC Posted July 6, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 6, 2012 Fracol s system is cleaner than the weight rod system. Ian Fox showed me his mod that Tiffen made... it was an adjustable angle third battery mount that screwed into the battery rails and allow one to swing the 3rd battery from directly under the post out and upward towards the monitor, very cool in my book. You wouldn't have a picture of that by any chance?
Premium Members Ian Vatcher Posted July 6, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted July 6, 2012 you're right Alfeo. Fracol s system is cleaner than the weight rod system. I have Fracol's system with the weight plates and idx mount as well. I just use the weight plates normally to keep the post shorter, and put on the idx plate and third batt when needed. it works like a dream.
