Thanks Afton, and now that is clear that SmallHD has a delay, does someone has done the same check with a Transvideo CineMonitor or Rainbow HD?

Would love to see this as well. I thought I've read that LCD panels intrinsically have a 1-2 frame delay due to the way the LCD's function (or maybe more)? Curious to see if this is within the threshold of what all monitors do. Also, has anyone spoken to SmallHD about this? I'm sure their response is "Yes, that's standard", but I'd be curious to see if an engineer somewhere could explain more.

every time you process the signal you'll lose time. depending on what the scaling is starting at 1920x1080 to 1280 by 800 and so on there has to be processing involved, so it depends on the speed of the hardware inside the monitor. The Alexa like every camera has 1 to 2 frame delay to begin with....

from the Transvideo manual:

HD6 evolution: Latency Less than 1 frame in 1080i and psf, SD.
Less than 1 frame in 720p and 1080p

Rainbow HD: Latency Less than 1 frame

Transvideo makes their own controller boards, firm/software, unlike most other manufacturers...

Of course all cameras have a processing delay (capture, debayering, apply REC709 lut) before output the HD-SDI signal. It's usually done in one frame at 25fps or less. We are able to notice a mismatch between sound and image if the difference is equal or over 2 frames (@25fps).

It would surprise me if Alexa output delay was over 1 frame, otherwise we would be able to notice a delay on every monitor.

Afton detect a 4frames delay, so this means that smallhd monitors generate a delay of 3 frames (still @25fps).

The question is to know if the delay in the SmallHD is due to a hardware too slow, or a software (the firmware) not fast enough?

If it's the hardware, we will have to wait for the DP8-Pro generation. But if it's firmware sensitive, as I hope, SmallHD may be able to reduce the delay...

I have a small HD DP7 Pro SB (Standard Brightness), and will check the delay soon.

I wonder if it affects only the HB Version? Can somebody test the OLED?

Also, I wonder if it is an issue that depends on the Signal - I have noticed and then tested with a timecode slate

a 4-5 frames delay at 25p in the Zacuto HDMI EVF last year, but found that with a 25 PsF or 50i, so basically an

interlaced signal there was no apparent delay (less than 1 frame). I'll try different signals with the SmallHD DP7 SB

(brand new, got it last week, latest firmware) tonight or tomorrow and report the findings.
