As another note Dave,

I think your probably right a IIIa arm would be a good choice, but If you were starting out I would still recomend the Pro-vid.

In my experience it works so well for the weight range for your student/lowbudget jobs. The nature of these jobs often being incredibly disorganised and very long days, often all in the rig (once on they want every shot on steadicam, they love the novelty), When your muscles are still developing and your balance etc I would not recomend humping around a needless weight cage. Its very light and carries DSR570 s Digibetas sr2 s and sr3 s very well.

I dunno, In the end, starting out, u get what u can get....

Hi,

I just used a Provid arm for the first time in my career. Five days in Barcelona with a rental rig (my wife was shooting a project for a friend of ours and last minute they were able to convince the Producer to add Steadicam, but it was too late/too expensive to take my rig, so we rented locally - thanks to Juan and all those who helped to make it possible). Not knowing how this arm is supposed act, the only comparison I have is with other model arms. Suffice to say, I was not impressed (I've owned a 3a, late series Master, and now a PRO). Each bone had a mind of its own and they were stiff. Yes, it works in the general sense and I was able to pull off all the shots, but to say that I missed my arm (and vest for that matter) would be a gross understatement. In my expeience, the 3a arm is a MUCH better arm (if you need an arm with less capacity, the EFP behaves the same as a 3a arm, but with lighter springs). On that note, I feel the EFP was/is a better rig on all fronts. If I'm not mistaken, the Provid was the replacement for the EFP too.

Alec,

I couldn't agree with you more!!!! I use a 20 year old IIIA, great from vest to stage. (it has had a few stage upgrades) The facility I work for has a ProVid and a new Master series type, the Vector. The Vector is just as good as the IIIA, technology obviously is better, the arm is sweet, and the vest upgrades Tiffen has done, I love. The ProVid, what can I say. I hate it. I didn't feel right raining on the ProVid parade earlier, but comparatively it's no match to the 3 or the Vector. If you haven't experienced the vest upgrades Tiffen has done on the Masters, they are great. I can't compare them to the back mounted models. They have these new "cross back straps" that really really help. The new breast plate that comes up higher and remains stiffer also is a tremendious help too. Sorry, don't want to get yelled at about praises one thing or another. :P I hope to get the ProVid upgraded as we use Steadicam a ton so we need two. So Thomas if you could pass on Brian's contact info, either here or as email, I would appreciate it.

Is the EFP the same weight range as the provid? In that case I would agree that the EFP is a vastly superior arm. They do have a mind of their own etc etc but I still love my provid arm, although I do hardly use it now....
