the glidecam gold in the "field"

I had to share this with you. Last week i was helping out on a shoot of a commercial in a giant mall where the only sell furniture. (go figure.... haha) There was a scanner crane, a bunch of lighting equipment a nice and small crew, and... a glidecam gold.

 

The setup: Glidecam gold with L7 pro monitor, Sony XDCAM with pro 35 adaptor and film lenses tele and wide angle (damn that looks good by the way) modulus transmitter and follow focus equipment.

 

I must say is was impressed. i have seen a lot of rigs been flown and i talked to a lot of operators and i just added the gold to my "wow i am impressed"list.

 

it was nice seeing an scanner crane being used ( i only had the chanche to "see"one once) and also the gold. i am impressed by the many options and i must say that the gold is a worthy opponent to the other camera stabilisation systems out there on the market.

Hey I must say that the first time I saw and used the XDCam with the Pro 35 addapter, Scanner Crane and the Glidecam Gold (all on seporate occasions) I was extremly impressed with each of them and the ease with which they all operate.

 

The XDcam has the potential to revolutionize ENG all over the world, with it moving to a more IT server based environment and the simplisity of the transfer between the disc's and the computer as well as the quality of images. I recently used the XDCam and the Pro 35 addapter on low budget feature film here in Australia and everyone loved the pictures (in IMX mode, which is roughly Digi Beta quality).

 

The Glidecam Gold is really operator friendly and I must say is one of the best light weight rigs I have flown. There is only one in Australia and we had it at a workshop in Melbourne in 2004 and everyone who saw and flew it absolutley loved it.

 

And of course the Scanner Crane. I think it must the one of the simplest and easiest cranes around to set up and control. We had one on a TV drama last year also and the ease of it allowed us setups which we would never have been able to do simply on a time (and cost of course) basis.

I've never heard of, or seen, the scanner crane. Do you guys know of a link on the net with pictures of it? What kind of crane is it?

Here you are. You operate this on your own with joystick and with videolenses you also have zoom/focus. It's easy to operate, you just need some time of practise.

Thanks for the pic. It seems that it's basically a Jimmy Jib with a different name.

The Scanner is made by E Grip Ment (www.egripment.com) and I believe is alot better then a Jimmy Jib but pretty much the same idea. It is made for TV sort of uses but we have used it with 16mm Aatons heeps of times

 

The remote head which I have used with the Scanner was heeps better then any of the Jimmy Jib heads I have seen or used. You have the choice of either wheels or a joy stick to control the head.

 

People who read Americam Cinematographer will have seen E Grip Ments add for their new telescopic crane (The Extreme T12) (similar to SuperTechno Crane) Has anyone seen this one? I for one am really looking forward to seeing one. Reading about it on the web is only teasing me.
