How To Build Out The Best Steadi Friendly DSLR Kit

I need some advice and help with this project.

DSLRs seem to keep coming at me / us so I'm going to build up a well done DSLR kit that flies good on Steadi and that can quickly be removed for sticks and handheld work back and forth. I'm tired of all these BS make-do systems people expect me to fly so I want to make it a great kit within the realms of DSLR imaging.

I'm basing the body off the Canon 5D Mark III since I own one and own Canon glass. I'll likely add some nicer glass if this project pans out. I don't want to get into a glass discussion until I have the over concept and chassis done.

I've looked at the Red Rock and Zacuto shoulder mount builds / bundles and wonder what the rest of you have seen or worked with that make them work in a solid and versatile manner?

The DSLR system Charles Papert built was super slick but I don't remember a lot about it. Charles if you see this thread please jump in.

My goal is to have a solid and stable package that I can use my Preston, CamWave and other accessories on that doesn't look like the Bride of FrankenCam and can be transformed quickly to handheld or sticks.

If any of you have any ideas, comments or photos, I'd appreciate the advise and feedback.

Thanks!

Robert

My own setup was due to go to V3.0 last year but I got tired of chasing my machinist and it never got built. I haven't done a DSLR shoot since the beginning of the year and frankly, not missing it!

So many setups have arrived on the scene, I haven't evaluated them all so I wouldn't want to suggest which one is the best, but I think there are some definite merits to the Letus Master Cinema series which Shane Hurlbut helped design.

I got one of the first MKV DSLR cages, enough room for all the accessories, nice weight, totally adjustable. Everything moves right to tripod, after removing slider plate.

Love it

The best setup I have used was a viewfactor cage with an anton bauer mount on the rods and an AB hotswap with two batteries on it for weight. I am currently building something similar for my t2i. Unfortunately my machinist(me) also never seems to have the time to finish such projects.

Simple. Arri-pro DSLR. SOLID, 123 block and Arri rod friendly. Matte boxes and follow focus.

Nothing else compares

I second it! I used numerous DSLR kits (consumer/prosumer/homemade/pseudo expert). Arri is the best. The matebox is exceptionally versatile and all the dimensions are industry standard.

What have you been using with it?

Mostly 5D mk2/3 with zeiss ef primes and 7D with PL ultra primes. There is only one arri kit here that i know. Most of the people still using redrock and such. Someone told me that Arri kit is not exactly availeble to buy yet. I don't know how the rental house got a hold of it. but i'm loving it...

That's interesting, because it's not available until next month. Aside from the three that Arri has I have the only other one built

it is interesting indeed! i'm gonna call the rental and learn about it. I don't want to be wrong second time in a row about a technical matter (first was the weight difference between pro/G-70) let me check and get back to you guys.

Ok. It was only partly Arri kit. After the very brief call that I have with my friend at the rental house I understood that the matte box was indeed Arri borrowed until the original complete kit becomes available. The bridge plate/bars/shoulder pad are made by in-house machine shop in order to use it while waiting for the complete kit (hats off to the machinist. It really looked like the real thing). And the follow focus was not even Arri (I never used said FF we always used with remote FF)

I’m sorry for the misinformation and thank you Eric for calling me on it which forced me to check it which I should have done before posting.

I just talked with an AC friend of mine. He says that he’s not sure that even the matte box was the one from dslr Arri.

So my whole statement becomes irrelevant and misleading. I used the kit 5 times; I don’t know how I confused a frenkenkit with the original Arri product.
