Premium Members Brian Freesh Posted October 21, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 21, 2012 Edit: just to put it in perspective.. the average New Zealand Music video has a budget of about $6000 USD for the entire thing.. The average LA music video I'm called for has a total budget of $5,000 USD. I've yet to do one.
Premium Members Thomas English Posted October 21, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 21, 2012 Push all negotiations onto email. Never negotiate and agree a rate on the phone. When they call you they have a spreadsheet with a number they need to match before the end of the conversation. When its by email your response becomes that number in the spreadsheet which they now need to get down or change some other figures in the column. If you don't like the way the negotiation is going you can slow it down whilst keeping your eye out for a better paid job. You always have essentially a written record of the negotiation. Premium Members Osvaldo Silvera SOC Posted October 21, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 21, 2012 Every market is different. A camera operator friend tells me a great camera operator rate in Buenos Aires is 250 USD per day flat. And one makes a decent living with that. Here, although that's more than the average US Citizen makes many of us would not think for a moment of accepting that rate for 12. Every place if different and every ones circumstances are as well. Evrim KAYA
http://www.steadicamforum.com/index.php?showtopic=16914&pid=80979&st=0entry80979 : no comment; " Hey all, I'm not sure if this is done here, but I'm shooting a short next weekend and we're in need of a steadicam op. I'm the DP on the project, but this is my first time using a steadicam operator. Quick notes on the project: 1) Shooting on the Jersey shore (about an hour south of NYC) 2) Camera: Alexa Plus w/ Ultra Primes (maybe the cooke 25-250, but if this proves to be too much of a pain for steadicam--I'll kill it) 3) Can pay somewhere around $600 for the day 4) Shooting on 11/8/12 all day. Hopefully I won't get any flack for posting. I could have called Local 600 and asked them, but I would rather find someone who's just getting started (or anyone who will work on a student price) "
Premium Members Osvaldo Silvera SOC Posted November 1, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 1, 2012 Try reaching David on the steadicamguild site. Or visit the Steadicam Operators association site to find ops by region. Also on this site there is a Jobs forum. I think you'll find more folks will look on there. Good luck with your shoot. Also when you post. Indicate if your A.C. has a focus system or if the operator will need to bring one. Also will you have a wireless video Tx will it be SD or HD ? Someone starting out that would do the job for your rate might not have a rig that would hold the Alexa with big primes and accessories. Indicate if your using codec or just recording to the sxs cards. All these things will describe the situation more in detail to a potential op. No need to have the poor op show up and not be able to use the rig because of 1 small wire, or the weight being too much for his/her set up. And always remember. If the op's inexperience shows up in your finished product, was it worth saving some cash..? Just my .
Evrim KAYA
Hey Osvaldo, The job offering in the previous post is not mine. Someone else posted it in Industry Contacts, Info and Links section. I copy/pasted here with the title “no comment” because i though it was –another ridiculous rate offer- to ask a complete steadicam package(to fly an alexa) with operator for a full day in exchange of 600USD. Premium Members Osvaldo Silvera SOC Posted November 1, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 1, 2012 Oh, lol. That's a relief. I was saying to myself, "wait a sec, isn't he an op ?" Thanks for the clarification. Ozzie
Premium Members William Demeritt Posted November 1, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 1, 2012 Was that guy trying to get someone for a student shoot? Or was he asking for someone on a "student rate" for a legit gig?
Evrim KAYA
Was that guy trying to get someone for a student shoot? Or was he asking for someone on a "student rate" for a legit gig? We don’t have the exact information on which type of job it is. But given the camera and lens package I’m pretty sure that it is indeed a legit job. But I don’t want to discuss this subject on this topic because I don’t want to be accused of cross-posting. The original post is on a different topic: http://www.steadicamforum.com/index.php?showtopic=16914&pid=80995&st=0entry80995 I only shared it on this page because I felt appropriate, given the nature of the offer and subject of this topic. Premium Members Alan Rencher Posted November 7, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 7, 2012 Just got a new one for the thread: "Hey Alan, we are really interested in using you. We are looking for a videographer that would film behind the scenes footage, we wouldn't be able to offer any pay but it would be a great learning experience. Let me know if you're still interested." My response: "I've spent quite a deal of money investing in my equipment and a lot of time and money during film school already. I have years of job experience, and the fact that you are trying to get someone to offer their time and equipment for no pay is appalling to me. I hope that no one is naive enough to take you up on your offer. I apologize for wasting your time and mine with my application." This was through an ad that was looking for someone with equipment to work for three days on a narrative shoot.
