Basically to go over what I'm doing wrong, what I'm doing right, and tips and tricks on improving. Can anyone recommend someone? I will ship my Flyer Rig with me if I can find a instructor willing to do this. My open date would be ideally NOV 6th. If he happens to not be available, let me know. I'm currently available for the 6th. Also, Janice Arthur (can be found here on the forum) has begun doing skype workshops, which may or may not be more convenient for you. ETA: Not to downplay Robert's instruction on operating the rig, but if you don't spend most of your time with him on the business side of steadicam operating you've wasted an opportunity. How much experience do you need , is there a test? IDK but sounds like something for me to work toward. I noticed Mr. Robert is sponsored by Division Camera, that's great because I am too (thef65project.com) and I am going visit them while in Town..Anyway..thanks for all of the help so far and I will keep you up to date (Brian) when I hear back from Mr. Robert.. I hope your schedules sync up. :) There's no "accreditation" as Charles said. You take a workshop from whomever you chose (who's offering) and, depending on the workshop, you may receive a certificate of completion afterwards. Operative word: completion. The certificate proves you paid for and attended the workshop, it makes no claims as to your skill. An argument could certainly be made that depending on your market you might be able to use that certificate to impress, but that's a different discussion. (I wish I could leverage my workshops like that) The SOA website will have information about their workshop. They have one once or twice a year in Pennsylvania. After researching your options, if you think you want to take that workshop make room for it in your schedule and do it. Just be aware that at the end of that week you won't be a great operator (unless you're a prodigy, and even then...). You'll be someone with a beginning set of tools with which to develop skills you can hone if, and only if, you practice constantly and for a long time. Good luck! Lead Instructor in Rockport for a few years, have taught over 1,200 students in 2, 3 and 6 day workshops. Glad to discuss private training situations. What Charles said, and more. The only thing that makes someone a Steadicam Operator is their work. Spending $$$ on gear and training does not. One can quite easily drop $ 100 - 120K on gear and be a hack. Good comprehensive training coupled with relentless practice makes one an Operator and not just an Owner. You can own a Stradivarius violin and make excreble noises. My class is called Aggressive Mediocrity, and will cover important topics like the illusion of progress, the long lost art of deflecting blame, how to keep a buzz going for 12 hrs straight, and most importantly - the skills needed to land hot background artists and stand-ins (by special guest lecturer Charles Papert). Has that been canceled ?? that class was cancelled due to the last student forgetting his safe word and losing a toe. He was pretty trashed so the good news is that he really didn't feel it until the next morning. Gummy bears and absinthe are no longer allowed in JCR after this "incident."
