Premium Members Mike Gailing Posted April 9, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 9, 2013 For those of you wondering, if you have a revision D or F Bolt (i.e. you got your Bolt serviced recently), a simple firmware upgrade will be all you need to pass timecode, metadata, and record flags. Can't wait to release this to the public - will be available soon. If you're at NAB, come by our booth and say hello Booth #C9939
Premium Members James Davis Posted May 13, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 13, 2013 I saw two bolts overheat and fail on a multicam job in the UK recently. Any ideas as to what might be causing this? Is it possible this might be related to the internal battery? Just curious as I was a potential customer but this has really out me off. Premium Members Frederic Chamberland Posted May 13, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 13, 2013 Hi James, I have had my Bolt for a while and while it becomes burning hot, never had an overheating problem. Velcro glue will melt . As hot (and maybe more) than the old Modulus. But not a single glitch yet related to heat. F
Premium Members joe mcnally Posted May 13, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 13, 2013 Will the heat not destroy the silicon and what else is in there fairly quickly ?
Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted May 13, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 13, 2013 The arrow doesn't heat up that much. (Not trying to troll but just to compare)
Premium Members Osvaldo Silvera SOC Posted May 13, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 13, 2013 A production company I work with on and off here has replaced a few of their Terradek units ( wifi versions) because of them over heating, last time they replaced 2 of them was at the beginning of the year. In an effort to make things small, they sacrifice heat sinks and metal surface area. So things get and stay hotter longer. However the heat and humidity mix here is quite brutal on electronics, not uncommon to have stuff fry because of the heat. It might be the same 90 degrees in Miami as in LA, but add 50% more relative humidity, and that's when things start to melt.
Premium Members Mike Gailing Posted May 13, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 13, 2013 Hey Guys, Heat related issues with the Bolt TX are very rare. I do know it gets hot, but thats because we pull as much heat away from the PCB as possible and move it toward the metal chassis. James, the units you saw fail were likely not upgraded. We performed a number of modifications to the Bolt line (free of charge) that greatly enhanced the stability of the device. This includes a higher voltage tolerance (6-28V) and a few interference mitigation modifications (to enhance range and transmission stability). We've also adjusted some things with the battery. Premium Members James Davis Posted May 13, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 13, 2013 Good to know Mike, for reference is there any particular serial number range etc or a way we can differentiate the modified/newer versions from the older ones? I heard talk above in this topic of revision D/F etc, but would be good to know for sure. Not trying to be harsh or anything but the heat was a bit of a concern for me too. Cheers James
Premium Members Mike Gailing Posted May 13, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 13, 2013 James, I believe anything above serial #72000873 will have most of the mods, but it isn't a for sure thing. I would have to manually check the device against our list of upgraded units. I understand the concern with heat, but as I mentioned earlier, we have had almost zero TX problems that were heat related. Its true the unit can get hot during a full day of use, but it will not affect performance.

Premium Members Lawrence Karman Posted May 23, 2013 Premium Members Report Share Posted May 23, 2013 Just used my Bolt for 2 consecutive nights, running ALL night and it performed flawlessly. Powered off the PRO rig via Dionic HC batteries that delivered 15v straight off the charger. No voltage issues. No "overheating". Latest upgrades.
