Premium Members Alan Rencher Posted October 25, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 25, 2012 http://www.rtmotion.com/ Has anyone used this system before? It seems like a pretty good deal, and I like the receiver size.
Zoltan Jonas
I've been following the development of the RTMotion Mk3 for many months now. What it promises, for the price bracket is quite impressive. I'm waiting for any substantial reviews to be published before I make a decision on it. Yes, the receiver size does make it very appealing, as well as the digital capabilities. Seems like they might give Preston a run for their money with the lens mapping function they're developing for it. Looking very forward to seeing how that works out. There is a discussion about the system at the Red User forum, if you haven't seen that yet. http://www.reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?80944-RTmotion-mk3-wireless-follow-focus. Premium Members Jarrett P. Morgan Posted October 28, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 28, 2012 I ordered one a little while ago. It should be here in about two weeks or so. When it gets here I will post an in-depth review, including a friend of mine's Variprimes (easily the stiffest lenses I have used.)

Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted November 4, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 4, 2012 Would you say that this system is a contender to the Preston?
Zoltan Jonas
Would you say that this system is a contender to the Preston? Wouldn't that be nice! Of course their individual price points alone would make it unfair to draw comparisons. BTW, I've barely heard anything in recent months from Hocus Products about their Axis1 system. They seem to be developing their product for more-or-less the same market. Could it be a a forced retreat in reaction to RTMotion's progress? Premium Members Alex Kornreich Posted November 14, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 14, 2012 Just used an RT motion out of necessity when my Preston 3 was in for repair. The build quality feels half that of the preston, which makes sense given the price. Tension was way too loose on the handunit, which may be adjustable, but not sure. Distance was mediocre, couldnt make it through a wall while focus puller was at monitor, which the preston, in my experience, would have had no issue. Motor strength wasn't tested exclusively, as we were on Optimo 16-42 and 30-80, which have light tension focus throws. But again, the build quality was OK, motors seemed dinky. I would not be confident it could push a cold or stiff lens, which I've dealt with quite a few of, especially if the lenses are older. Definitely test before you buy, but given the cost, it seems like a decent alternative to a preston if you can't afford it. Personally, I'd go with a 2 channel Bartech w/ iris, and M-One motors over this system. Customer service with Jim Bartell is fanstastic, handunit is very solid (made of metal, aluminum i think), and M-One motors are very strong.
Premium Members Alex Kornreich Posted November 14, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 14, 2012 One last thing I forgot to mention, there was serious lag from when the handunit was turned, and the motor would respond. Could have just been my unit, but to me that would be a deal-breaker.
Premium Members Peter Hoare Posted November 14, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 14, 2012 Hi Zoltan, hah, hardly a retreat. Development is all done, we are in final stages of testing (in the field and on the bench) and theres a bit of businessey stuff to finish off and we will enter full production shortly. Its a good system, im very proud of it. No lag, very fast (as many of you will have seen at Cinegear or NAB) very accurate and quiet, and very solidly built. Obviously I would say those things, so hopefully you will get the chance to see it for your self soon. We will have it at NAB and Cinegear, and we intend to start sending demo units round in the coming months as well. Pete.
Premium Members Afton Grant Posted November 14, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 14, 2012 I'll back Peter up on this one. His will be one of the ones I'll be watching closely. From what I've seen, it's legit and will be a strong contender in this field.
Premium Members Jarrett P. Morgan Posted November 19, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 19, 2012 I got my RTmotion single channel system today. I am going to do more intensive testing tonight, but just based on my first impressions I am very happy. The whole system feels very solidly built and (at least in my system) there is no delay in turning the hand unit and the motor turning. I will post more thorough thoughts once I have had a chance to use it in the field.

Kurt As far as I know you can only order them direct through RTMotion.com There is quite a lead time with them right now, I think they are backordered through the end of the year. Talke to Kris or Leslie at rtmotion. I am going to a local rental house today to test how the motor works with various stiffnesses of lenses. Zoltan Jonas
Great to hear from you Peter! I'm looking very forward then to seeing both the RTMotion and Hocus models in action. It'll be somewhat difficult for me personally - I'm in Sydney, Australia. Over here, I don't get to see much in action beyond Prestons and Bartechs. I'll be buying a Steadicam sometime around Jan-Feb. After that, I'll be directly in the market for remote FF. By then, both your model's, and RTMotion's might have a more robust market presence. All the best until then.
