Boyd Hobbs Posted June 21, 2013 Report Share Posted June 21, 2013 I've been on the wait list for a long time for a single channel RT motion system. They finally got stock in and sent me my unit. They added an iris slider for free into the hand unit. So I purchased a second motor and I was up and running in no time with a two channel system for much less than any other two channel system. Plus if I ever want to add zoom, I just send in the hand unit to add the zoom button and buy a new motor. They've created some really innovated (and sometimes different) features into the design. To those that are used to Prestons, it's a bit of switch in thinking at times when setting it up. The thing most ACs seem to have trouble with (but end up liking) is that the motor ports on the receiver have no specified function. Once you plug in motors, the hand unit can directly communicate to them and assign them to an axis such as focus and iris. The other cool thing is there new 3.1 motor. I just got it as my second motor. Really cool design. You can put the gears on either side of the motor, this solves the age old problem of the iris and focus rings being too close. Its a bit stronger feeling (especially when calibrating) than the 3.0 motors. The receiver is incredibly small. I no longer feel the need to babysit the AC when they mount it. Doesn't change much in terms of weight distribution. Range is decent. In my experience, it craps out at about the same distance as a bartech. Build quality is good. It's not a tank. But it's not delicate. Machined out of aluminum. Recessed buttons. Wheel is smooth. Could maybe have a bit more resistance. But I've never had an AC complain. Battery life is incredible. The thing lasts forever on one battery. Upgradable. I really want to put in a good word for them here. They are bringing the recent trend of modular and upgradable technology into the follow focus market. They use a single 4 pin lemo cable for multiple purposes. All the ports to interface between their motors, receiver, transmitter all the same and unlabeled. And thats because you can plug anything into anything and they just start talking. They are even designing a breakout box. Basically a bar of 4-pin lemo sockets for you to plug in as many motors and controllers as you want. You could control an entire 3D rig with one receiver and one hand unit. Focus (x2), Iris (x2), Zoom (x2), convergence and divergence. That's why they ask to you assign functions to specific motors. Plus, if you want to allow two hand units to talk to one receiver you can do that as well. One controller handles the iris and one could do the focus. In summary, I think they are a new brand that are bringing some new features into the follow focus market. Definitely a company to follow that is quickly fixing the (few) mistakes they are making. Haven't used their gear before and wanted to ask if the 22. Aug. is optimistic estimate for the deliveries of new stuff they have. I waited for answer to my email for about a week and eventually called them today. There answered a nice woman and I was happy with the information they gave me plus she apologized the lack of response. So I guess they're just receiving flood of emails and have too little staff to sort em out. Give them a call and you'll get an answer to your problem. There's a few more goodies coming from them. Also, response from them can be sketchy at times as they are a very small shop. It's all great to offer what they do in terms of AC remote focusing, but in live-broadcast environments (for instance), self-operated lens control is usually the way to go, and I've suggest to Kris and his team (in more than one email) that they design a gimbal-mounted controller that can do both focus-zoom and rec, if not iris as well. I'm from Sydney, Australia. The range of brands for remote FF here is limited almost exclusively to Preston and BFD. Much of the 'professional' freelance industry isn't comfortable with risking time and money with other alternatives. In fact I have a few acquaintances who arrogantly, and pretentiously dismiss 'other' brands, as if to protect their emotional investment in the two brands mentioned. The problem is technical support! Preston and Bartech are excellent! respond immediately and understand the difficulties of living in distant countries!
