  1. 1. If you could buy today, which arm would you buy?

    • Pro Tian
    • Tiffen G-70x
    • Pro Atlas
    • Tiffen G-50x
    • A different arm... and why didn't you list it?

"I realy like the opportunity to tweak arm settings discrete while going back to one,..."

The PRO arm gives you the same feature.

BTW, I just finished an 8 week project (Alexa/Leica primes) and once the arm was adjusted properly on day 1, I never touched it again. It is very forgiving.

Our equipment offers us different ways of working. Do we like to work these ways because we have that gear, or do we have that gear because we like to work these ways?

For me, the latter. If I have a lock-off anywhere in a shot. I'll trim the arm lift for the appropriate boom height, and trim the motorised stage for the tilt. This typically takes me about 10 seconds total. During the rest of the shot, the arm is so iso anyway (I don't trim the iso so much, just for running and vehicle shots, when I like it somewhat less iso-there's probably another discussion lurking between these parentheses) that I don't notice the boom setting, but as I approach the lock-off, I hit the stage-motor preset button on the yoke so when I'm there the rig just slides into position and stays there without any correcting effort required from my gimbal hand.

I've grown to appreciate these features, and would miss them.

Anyway, happy holidays all!

There is the difference, i don't miss those " features " at all, not for a mili second. Its like all others already have stated, i never have touched the arm on alexa day's. Simple lens change isn't enough to get my t handle out.

I also found my lock offs are so much better, that pro arm even works getting my breathing out :-)

Nope, never looked back and never will

Indeed, happy holidays, at least we agree on that :-)

The PRO arm is brilliant. No doubt about that. Just to speak fairly about the G70x, however, I just finished 5 months on a show. We went from zooms, to master primes, to weird 200mm lenses with no matte box..... I never had to adjust the lift either. I think it's just a personal preference thing. I probably could have, and I'm sure there are operators that love to tweak all the time to get things just perfect, but I feel that's a statement more about the operator rather than his or her gear. I don't see my footsteps, and I've been specifically complimented by multiple DPs in the past about my lock-offs. Again, this is not a brag. I guess my point is, and this point has been made before, we the operators are what makes all the difference. Focus on your gear, and you'll always have shinier fancier gear. Focus on your operating and you'll be a better operator.

Like i statet before, no ideas about the X, purely speaking about the experience on the g50/g70. But then again, kudos what works for you.

I had a glidecam gold in the old days which i made nice things with, so yes, its about the op. But this op likes te be helped by his gear. But then again, what works for you........

Happy holidays all

I can't see Erik/Garret debate anymore, reason?

Footsteps is THE only issue with my G50 (not X), other then that it's as all you've said: different choices and preferences, tools, no tools, adjust, no adjust, fine tuning, etc etc.

but still a big issue is out there: you CAN see your footsteps if you go super slow, no tecnique or whatever reason, if I give you my arm I'll see your footsteps, no argument (in fact I can see them in previous owner footage).

Fact is that for some (dps and directors too, incredible) isn't an issue, problem is that for me it is an issue.

then asking me more then 1000 dolla plus shipping just to fix something that's not wotking as it should, well, what can i say? better nothing or I go brutal.

Is this arm available to demo in the US?.

If it is as good as anything available/made here in the US,

The manufacturer would WANT to get it available here to several operators to test out, if it's as buttery smooth as advertised, it will sell like Hot Chocolate on a winters day.

Action should send an arm to a few of the Live TV operators who would be able to test it for several days in a row, that would be the best test I would think. From super slow moves to full out running, 360's and lock offs, that would put it through the paces and be the best field testing you could do. If it fails, it will fail, but if not, it's a Win for the company.

Oh very cool, Didn't know you were in LA Joshua. I'm in Miami, so I'm out, but some other op who uses a Pro arm should definitely give it a test, It would be a great test, so Joshua could test out a Pro arm as well at the same time. Always good to test out gear as you never know what's gonna surprise you.

Oh, is the range from 11 to 77 lbs all with the same spring set?

Just curious.

You know I'm not positive what you have to do to get down to 11 pounds. I haven't ever had to do that.

You would have to take out a few springs I would imagine. But the springs are pretty easy to take out. But if you have a full set of 16 springs in you have a pretty good range. I had 7springs in each section for the last 5 or 6 years and i haven't really ever had to add or take away springs. But I have two more springs in my box just in case there is something heavier.
