Alex Kolb
Hello all, I feel guilty posting a second thread in only a day's time, but I've been working on my second demo reel for a few months now, and I'm ready to get it up. I have a nice 30 second sequence from a film I did that involves 30 seconds of soldiers with assault rifles running though the woods. There's no firing of the weapons, just holding them. I'd love to include the sequence, since it's some of my best work, but I'm concerned that the weapons may turn off producers. Is this an acceptable sequence to leave in? If it cost me so much as one client, it wouldn't be worth it, but if it's not a big deal, that be great. My clientele is primarily based in Europe, so I'd appreciate any feedback from operators in that area. Cheers, Al
Premium Members Afton Grant Posted November 2, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 2, 2012 I can't imagine guns in your demo reel would hurt you. If anything, it might help since often times, the use of guns requires a higher production value due to stunts, safety, pyro, etc. Just like if there were a love scene in a DP's reel, they wouldn't be thought of as a pornographer. Leave them in.

Lee Dashiell
Leave them. This political correctness has gotten to a point of being ridiculous.
Premium Members chris fawcett Posted November 2, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 2, 2012 You'll never work for von Trier ;) By all means, use your best footage. Chris
Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted November 4, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 4, 2012 I don't see any issues with showing guns in your demo, you are not responsible for the subject that you shoot and therefore you should not be juged on it, as long as the shots shows your talents in steadicam and framing, you are good to go. On the other hand, it depends on the clients you are looking for. If you have clients that are anti guns fanatics (I am anti guns but don't mind a good war movie), you may want to have a second PG version of your demo reel. Premium Members Daniel Stilling DFF Posted November 5, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 5, 2012 I don't see why that would be a problem. It's after all a measure of your skill, not the content of the movie in which you have no control.
