Premium Members Tim Moynihan Posted November 8, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 8, 2012 Just wanted to share a product that I received yesterday. As you are aware the Epic has only 1 HD-SDI output. This is an issue when you need to feed an onboard transmitter as well. I found this little passive splitter from ETS in California: http://www.markertek...ems/PV991.xhtml Small yet well built and solid. No power required. Made in USA. Evrim KAYA
112 USD seems a little high for such a device.
Premium Members Daniel Stilling DFF Posted November 9, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 9, 2012 That's nice. I would be curious about what the little box has inside. I have split HDSDI signals successfully with just a BNC T, but always wondered if I was degrading the signal. I might just give this box a spin :)
Premium Members Tim Moynihan Posted November 9, 2012 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted November 9, 2012 Daniel, that's exactly what prompted the search for this splitter...I was doing a commercial and tried to split the signal using a T and the BOXX just rejected the signal from the T. I didn't want any more power cables so looked for a passive splitter. This one seems to be perfect. And, actually, $112. is pretty inexpensive, I thought... Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted November 9, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 9, 2012 Interresting, but without power what does the box do? It's definitely not emplifying the signal...
Premium Members Twojay Dhillon Posted November 9, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 9, 2012 "...The PV991 HD-SDI Splitter is designed to split a SMPTE 292M video signal into two full-quality broadcast video signals and send them over RG59 coax up to 450 feet..." Notice how it doesn't say two full HD signals.
Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted November 9, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 9, 2012 It could be doing some magic to keep you from double terminating the signal. You will still get a 3db(half) loss in signal strength but that is significantly better than what happens if you double terminate(such as when you use a T). Could also be just the same as a T but he says it works better so my guess is some sort of transformer style setup to avoid the double termination. ~Jess
Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted November 9, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 9, 2012 That got me thinking. You could probably take a cable tv splitter, put F to BNC adapters on it and have a working HD-SDI splitter. Wouldn't be surprised if that is actually whats in that box. Premium Members Lars Erik Posted November 9, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 9, 2012 The Epic Pro I/O module would solve the second bnc problem? Not used it myself, only used a T when using the epic. Had various results using the T. Sometimes good, other times not good.
Premium Members William Demeritt Posted November 9, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 9, 2012 I bought one of these and made a 5v cable to power it from my sled. Fixes the irregularities I've seen in the RED MX and gives amplified output. http://www.markertek.com/Routers-Switchers-DA's/HD-SDI-Distribution-Amplifiers/Matrix-Switch-Corporation/MSC-HDDA4.xhtml

Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted November 9, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 9, 2012 What about the decimator one better, same?
Premium Members William Demeritt Posted November 9, 2012 Premium Members Report Share Posted November 9, 2012 I found it was cheaper, and generally I'm staying away from Decimator products.
Moderators Alec Jarnagin SOC Posted December 23, 2012 Moderators Report Share Posted December 23, 2012 OK, so I bought one of these HD-SDI splitters to try out. On my current show, the "A" body is an Alexa plus but the B & C bodies are the basic Alexa. Because we use primes and quick release plates (and have only two Boxx transmitters and Cine Tapes) I've been moving the "A" body to Steadicam thus far but lately we've been leaving the "C" on the sled. This body has only one HD-SDI monitor out so I added this little splitter box. While the image to my monitor is fine (as well as other monitors we've tested), the line going to the Boxx transmitter breaks up. We've swapped the outputs, cables, and tried both Boxx transmitters we have with the same results. It seems to me that the Boxx is a little more picky than other devices. Has anyone else used this splitter successfully with the Boxx transmitter and Alexa? I'm wondering if swapping the splitter out would help, but I doubt it. Thanks.
