Switching to goofy

Absolutely worth training. If the phsical space prohibits you from swinging the arm across, then you don't have much choice. For example, I operate goofy but want to hug a wall or stair railing on my left. I must switch arm sides, and then wish I had practiced more!

As far as I know very few non goofy operators practice shooting goofy. There are situations where you need the rig to hug a wall to your right where you must either operate goofy or Don Juan. I have on a couple of occasions walked backwards in Don Juan in order to get the shot, but switching to goofy is an option.

Goofy is the truth. It is the light. Go goofy. If not for you, your loved ones.

P.S. As a goofy Op I have never found a limitation to Op'ing this way. If you think about it, ALL other Op'ing -- save for remote stuff -- is performed by Op'ing from the smart side.

2 Weeks ago I had a shot that required me to switch. I made the switch, did 4-6 takes in "regular" mode and I couldn't get it to be smooth. (This was a very height critical, creeeeping move against a wall, about shoulder level.) We got one take that was OK, but I wanted one more after I switched back to "right side operating".

I was smoother, and more precise when I was goofy (which is my normal stance) BUT I couldn't get close enough to get the same framing to the wall AND walk slow enough. I learned then, that I should practice "regular" more often. I think if it were a faster move where I was walking normal speed it would have been better, but I still want that in my tool belt.

There are some circumstances when you'll just have to shoot goofy (or regular).

Spiral staircases in old castles wind up clockwise, so that the attackers, mostly right handed, couldn't sword fight their way up the stairs, giving the defenders a great advantage. Goofy swordsmen were in great demand in olden days.

When shooting on stairs, we face the same problem today.

Embrace your goofy side (occasionally).

Learning to operate on your other side is just a question of getting over yourself and doing it. Once you overcome the initial confusion, it's no big deal, but don't expect any results if you only try it for 20 minutes.

There definitely are situations where mastering this pays off.

All the best,

Chris

I've been a busy boy for over 6 years now. I've never had to swap over.

It's like doing calligraphy with your non writing hand. It won't ever be as good.

I'm not paid for average operating.

More power to you tho.

Knowing both is best, of course.

Goofy was frowned upon a bit in the 90's when I started. I knew it was the way for me after being a Steadicam assistant & AC for years, and through trial and error, I learned it was the best for me.

Besides, I skateboarded, snowboarded, water skied, and repelled goofy.

In smaller markets it can help by operating on the smart side of cameras.

If it makes sense and feels much better - you're probably goofy.

Fly smart - have fun!
