cannot get Panasonic AG-HPX250P to feed Stanard def monitor

Hey guys I just bought the Flyer LE and am having problems getting the right signal to the monitor. I'm currently using the Panasonic HPX250p which has an SDI out and when I run a BNC from the camera to the sled I continue to see "no signal." I'm worried because I am flying the Sony FS700 for a shoot in three days and it has the same SDI out. Should't an SDI out feed to a standard def monitor through BNC? Is there a setting in the camera i need to change or will I need to run the signal thought a Decimator first to downres?

SDI can be standard definition, but it is still digital. The standard def monitor on the Flyer uses an analog signal (composite). You may well be able to get a composite output from those cameras. I'm unfamiliar with them, but it should be in the manual under output settings. It's possible on the F3, though it's confusing cause the setting doesn't say composite. There's a thread from earlier this year about the F3.

 

Google the manual for the FS 700 to see if it'll do it. You'll still want to test that you can get the proper signal through that monitor before you go to set though.

For the Flyer SD, you need to use the yellow RCA cable

Otherwise, you can use a downconverter SDI to Analog: Blackmagic Design: Mini Converters Tech Specs

Or update your monitor to a HD (I don't really know if 100% doable on the flyer)

Thanks for the advice guys. I think I will buy the Decimator2 to transform the SDI to an analogue signal. But in the meantime is it possible to run a yellow RCA cable from the camera to the sled using female RCA to male BNC adaptors (if that exists) at each end?

Sure, but why? You're still dealing with a digital signal unless you come out of a composite port.

It sounds like you are maybe confusing the signal type with the connectors? You can't tell the type of video signal by the connector type. SDI pretty much always uses BNC connections, but so do analog connections: composite SD, often labeled "video", and component SD or HD, (YPbPr).

 

RCA video connectors are simply a consumer/prosumer-grade connection for composite or component. Adapters can be put on one or the other end of a cable to adapt to the connection you need.

 

The Flyer's sled has a BNC connector, but it is SD only because of the monitor, which is SD composite only (and because the cable is not rated for the higher demands of digital signals).

 

You need to research the 250 to see if it offers an SD composite output. If so, a short cable with the proper connector to the sled is all you need. Same with the 700.

 

If this explanation doesn't make sense, then I recommend you dig in and do some online research to master a basic understanding of video signals types and connections.

The video out on the HPX 250 is on the dumb-side of the camera, near the front of the hand rest / zoom rocker.

hi,

try this and see what you get.

go to the "output selection" and choose "downconvert" on the first choice "sdi&hdmi".

then go to "downconvet mode" at the same menu tab and choose what you want (letterbox,squeeze,crop..squeeze for a widescreen monitor).

i think this will work if you want to use bnc cables and not rca directly from the video out as alan said.

i 'll check the manual too to be sure

As far as i know, the 250 cannot output HD-SDI and composite video at the same time.

 

there is a need to select downconvert under output options.

 

i am not sure if the fs700 has composite video out. you might have to get a BMD or AJA convertor to convert SDI into analog for framing.
