... Hey a Vita-Mix blender lasted 3 months with me and they are meant to be Meth-smoking hippy proof.

That's why I got the eighth year extended warranty but I'm only chopping fruit and veggies for smoothies. Where did you find a VitaMix recipe for meth? Mix that with some fresh berries and you've the Wake Up Sunshine Berry Blaster smoothie and customers that come back several times a day!

Didn't they teach it you in the workshop? I've controversially swapped to Blendtec because the engineering is more advanced (actually I broke up with the owner of the Vitamix). Eric... which side of the great Blender debate do you find yourself supporting? Blendtec or Vita-Mix?

So, I'm a new Blender operator and I'm having trouble getting the blades in dynamic balance. I'm spinning a Cuisinart HD-2000 that I modified to blend cinder blocks. Should I take a workshop?

David,

I'd recommend referencing the Blender Operator's Handbook for info on balancing. However, you might get a stern talking to by another blender operator with years of experience and his own method of balancing. Your call.

That said, all anyone outside of this forum will care about is if your food or beverage is properly blended, presented professionally, and you're easy to cook with.

Blend safe,

Grant

That's pure BS Grant! (blender splatter)

You're just a washed up wanna-be barista who hasn't blended a real smoothie in ten years. Didn't you get fired from Dairy Queen? Go back to your Hamilton Beach Preteneda Blend and your Lazy Boy while the rest of us revel in our high tech motors and over-sized canisters!

Well uh, Will, I'm pretty sure it was about vests, then arguing, then back to vests, then more arguing, then something about Tiffen, and then more arguing, and then arms, then arguing about arms, and then arguing about blenders, and I'm honestly surprised Baldwin hasn't chimed in more. Is Jumbo's having some sort of special?

I have been busy preparing the blessed altar at Jumbos for this year's Steadicam rain-a-thon after CineGear. I have put 80's hits into the juke box, removed the hard liquor, added bud light to their taps and put up an additional railing to keep a safe distance between the ops and the dancers (mainly so no ops ask the dancers to break a $5).

Vitamix 5200 still strong 2 years later, and I have an 8 month old in the house, his mom blends everything fresh, he has yet to taste formula or anything canned or bottled from a store. That Vitamix rocks...

OH, And I rock the WK dual mount vest...9 years now.

But I still want to get a pro Vest for some jobs, Miss my old pro vest.

And I'd love to test out the ExoVest at Cinegear to see how it feels.

PS, The WK Dual Mount Universal Delux vest with the articulaing second socket for the front is quite a bit more than the Exo price. Quite a bit!

I am wondering whether the configuration of the thigh pads on the Exovest is something that could be retro-fitted to conventional front mounted vests. It seems that the Exovest pads place the "frontal pushing forces" from the vest under load directly onto the illiac crest at the top of the hips rather than broadly across the abdomen. Would this not be a benefit for all vests?

I am in the early days of my use of conventional vests and perhaps I have not hit on the correct fitting method, but I find I am susceptible to the tingling down the front of my legs which Chris Fawcett sent me a stark warning about ....

"The tingling sensation you describe is meralgia paraesthetica, and comes about when the inguinal ligament traps the lateral femoral cutaneous nerve underneath it. It's a common complaint of Steadicam operators and fashion victims. Yes, tight jeans can bring it on too. The vest must have been too low or too hard at the waist, or just badly made. By the way, that tingling seamlessly transitions into permanent nerve damage, so it's best avoided."

Is there a demonstrable reduction in the meralgia tingling with the use of the Exovest?

I have begun improvising some extra "Exovest-style padding" for the iliac crest inside the front of a conventional vest but again haven't hit on the right combo of position/hardness to reduce the meralgia tingling, although the pressure on the abdomen is greatly reduced.

I am thinking on a cautionary note that perhaps directing the frontal pushing forces onto the illiac crest in a conventional vest with DIY or retro-fitted padding may even increase the potential for meralgia tingling because the majority of the downward force is directed onto the front of the hips, unlike the Exovest which I understand perhaps "halves" the frontal pushing forces due to its rear vertical bracing and direction of load onto the rear of the hips.

I hope this post can clarify some advantages of the Exovest and maybe encourage some of the principles to be adopted elsewhere for our ongoing health.

I tried the Exovest again at NAB this year. One thing that I noticed was that the vest puts the weight on different back muscles than I'm used to with my traditional best. I'm not sure if this is a good or bad thing, but it may cause tiredness in the back much quicker until those muscles strengthen. Dud anyone else notice this?
