There is only one way to step on your segway is from the front, which is also blocked by the rig. You have to swing your sled over to step on the segway; not practical! Cheers, Ken Nguyen. He seems to have worked very hard and done a very good job. Second, I wouldn't stress about the minor percentage of situations that he might have to bail on this thing. It seems like a smaller rig and maybe his own company and he may be able to control the environments he works in without the real risk of having to bail ever. Lastly, if I was ever personally in this and the only thing between me and escape was the rig, boy that arm would be swinging so fast out of the way it would not be an issue. Lee Dashiell Posted February 3, 2013 Author Report Share Posted February 3, 2013 Well, I've been running the segway for 3 years now and I've come off of it 4 times. None of those events are pretty. They happen in a split second, kind of like being in a car accident just uglier…lol…that being said, when you come off of the segway, it's usually because the segway has hit something that stopped it and your body continues in motion. Hanging onto the steadicam arm is the trick, it will certainly move with you and you can keep the camera from hitting the ground but it's ugly and will certainly pump some adrenaline into you. If you're running a system like this where you would literally jump off of the entire rig, you're operating in an environment that you probably shouldn't be. Flying the steadicam on the segway has additional risks associated with it and every operator should recognize that. The other side of that is the risk vs reward and should be an educated decision by the operator. It's certainly not for everyone, but it is for me. I mainly do travel and tourism promotional pieces and we work in a pretty controlled environment. I've never stepped on the segway from the front, only from the back.
