What model monitor is this?

I just purchased an EFP rig, and it came with this monitor.

 

I'm just looking for a manual for it, and couldn't find any info on the actual monitor. I figured one of you would know, and might know where I could find a manual.

Hi Bryan,

 

I don`t know this monitor to tell you which knob exacly you need to turn to adjust to 16:9. I will try to get in touch with a person who has helped me with my monitor settings - may be he will be able to send you some details regarding switching to 16:9.

that is an old efp monitor. i think they were modified ikegami studio monitors. pretty sure they are not 16:9. i'll ask around l.a. on who would still know that. i may even have an old brochure for that rig, as it was my first way back when. i'm in chicago at the moment, but i'll get back to you when i get home from this job.

Geoff is right it's an old EFP monitor. It doesn't do 16:9 unfortunately. It's actually an Ikegami stuio camera view finder, CP just put a green piece of glass in front of it. I'm not an engineer but if you need help with it let me know. If I was you as soon as financially possible I'd replace it.

It's a little more complicated that that. The monitor was an Ikegami VF4523. You can download the original schematic and owners manual at http://www.ikegami.com/br/products/acc/vf4523.html. Actually, CP did 3 things to it: We replaced the tube with a brighter green tube (this was an option), added a circular polarizing filter and a frameline generator.

I guess i could have told you it was from an old EFP. I just bought it from a friend last week. er...it meaning the whole rig.

 

I can't get the framelines to appear though, and I know it's possible, becuase I've used it before. Hopefully that manual will help some. If not i'll call the original owner.

 

I'm looking at the Transmedia LCDs as a replacement, but I am going to wait until after this workshop next week before I buy. I'm guessing that making a large purchase like that will come easier after a week of being with other rigs, and asking questions. Maybe even find a hint hintdeal up there...

 

I'll keep on shooting with it in squashed 16x9mode until i can find the funds for a new one.

You can adjust this monitor to 16:9 by turning VR12 potentiometer (see page 13 of Service Manual )

 

Before you do that equipt your self with a plastic screwdriver (plastic tip that is) - no to cause a shot circut. If you feel unconfortable with this operation than ask some friendly eletronic guy to do it for you.

 

What you need to do is take your camera and a piece of paper with either circle or some rectangles. Make the camera film (in 16:9 mode) the piece of paper - conect it to the monitor and adjust this VR12 screw to get the picture right.

I just looked thru the EFP Manual I have, and it does not contain this monitor, just the LCD.

Would it be possible for you to scan the EFP manual into PDF (jpeg - or whatever other eletronic format) and share it with us (2nd hand EFP owners)?

I found out why.

 

I opened up the monitor, and the connector was loose. I gently pushed it back in, and they appeared.

 

Someone else was having the same problem, but I can't find their post. Hope they find this one.

could you make a little sub board that switched between two diffenent pots

one adjusted for each aspect ratio???

You are 100% right David, I was refering to page no. 2 it has this "13" number on the right side and I was to tired to make sure that this is actually a page number :) Sorry for that.

 

About makeing the board. Yes that is possible. The trick is to unmount the potentiometer from the monitor board then make a new board with two potentiometers of that same kind and a switch and simply connect it to the monitor board via cables. Then the only thing needed to be done is to set the correct aspec ratio (screen height) on both potentiometers.
