How much experience do I need to take a workshop?

Hello,

This is my first post after reading here for about 2 years and I'm overwhelmed by this community.

So first of I am 20 years old and love framing the best shot I can imagine.

My whole family is in the Film/Broadcast Business and so the infected me with the passion for moving images. I've been on sets since I can remember and I did my first short as I was 9. Meanwhile I work in a theater and my position is called "Multimedia" (If I tell that to someone who has no theater experience, they have no idea what I'm doing). Back to topic.

Since I'm 16 I do little film projects. Music videos. Some corporate stuff and so on.

I am facinated by Steadicam since I first saw a operator on set where my mother did the costumes.

On the first project where the budget allowed it I rented a glidecam to try that "feel". I loved it from the first moment.

Now to my question:

I got the mail with the information about the next Gold Workshop in Istanbul and I was completely exited!

In the registration form it says: "The requirement for students is simply that they have camera experience ...."

Would you say that the amount of experience I have is enough after what I told you?

I'm pretty sure that Steadicam is what I really want to do and need your help to decide my next steps.

I also thought about buying a used Zephyr but after reading here for this time I think the workshop is the better use of money at this point.

Thank you all for what I already learned from simply reading your correspondence.

And thank you in advance for even thinking about my problems.

Sincerely,

Benedict Heinzl

PS: I already read the Operators Handbook cover to cover.

Unless the workshop is different from all the rest, you are totally qualified to take it. In my class in 1998, there were several film newbies and at least one operating newbie (me). It's designed to teach you about the steadicam, how it works, what it can do and give you an idea about whether or not you might be interested in doing it for a living.

Take it and enjoy!

Hello Benedict,

I think you’re ready to take a workshop. What it says in the registration form is to remind you that a steadicam operator is first and foremost a camera operator. But you don’t need to be a senior camera operator to take the workshop. You need however to know about framing, operating, the feel of camera beforehand which I think you already have.

But I have to remind you; taking a workshop will not transform you into a steadicam operator. The workshop is like an initiation. It will give you a chance to get to know the art from teacher/operators and it will give you necessary skills in order to continue to exercise on your own. You’ll be like a Padawan coming out of the workshop.

You made a wise decision by not buying a rig yet. Attending a workshop is indeed a better way to spend your money.

I live and work in Istanbul; I’ll be visiting the workshop so I guess I’ll see you there. If you need info about the city, you can PM me.

Welcome to the community and fly safe.

It's really refreshing to see someone worried about education before equipment. You are absolutely right about taking the workshop before buying a rig.

Beware though, you will love it so much, you will from the day you finish the workshop embark in a tough but rewarding road, and who knows where that will take you?

Go for it, have fun!

I can only speek for the Sachtler/Artemis workshop. It is a very hands on small group intesive workshop. Curt Schaller, is the lead instructor and the designer of the Artemis line of stabilizer, he is the nicest guy and a great instructor. He lives and breathes Cameras and Stabilizers. He can answer all your questions you might have. Contact: artemis_info@me.com

workshop content:

"4 day basic workshop camera stabilizer systems

• Workshop fee is 1050.-€ net - plus 19% VAT.
Note: If you got a VAT number, you do not have to pay VAT extra.

• Plus 50.- € catering flat rate,
incl. second small breakfast, lunch and in the afternoon coffee and cake."

The price is very reasonable in my opinion.....you will know after the 4 days if Steadicam operating is for you or not. It will give you the basic knowledge to make informed decisions on your future.

Gruesse.

Now with the manufacture sponsored workshops if you are upright, breathing and have a valid credit card you're qualified to take the workshop. Some Manuafacturing based workshops are also sales events (its like getting that free vacation but you have to listen to their time share sales speech) and others are teaching to teach
