James Cameron on the Art of Steadicam

That's one of the reason why I was attracted to the steadicam world. it's the only shot the Director will not want to operate, -- ever.

Sometimes when a director wants to operate I let him do a few takes then offer to releive him of the camera now that I understand perfectly what he is looking for. Doesn't work every time though. After all it's their film in the end.

His brief steadicam comment is in the second half of the interview, so you need to fast forward through all the nonsense to the end of the clip at 08:48 and it will boot up the next clip automatically.

Interesting, I didn't know Mr. Cameron did all of the Hand Held operating. Would that mean he would have to still pay the camera operator even though hes not working?

 

On Terminator 2 Jimmy Muro refused to operate on that helicopter flying below that overpass on the freeway, so he did it - on True Lies he couldn`t stand the thought of letting the others have all the fun and operated out of a helicopter while the hired operator had a paid break on the ground...
