Adaptor plates, use in a pinch or good all the time?

Questions for y'all..

I have a Sachtler Artemis, its currently V-mount, and I need to kit it out with a battery setup. It seems to me that AB batts would be the smart decision given how great they are etc. My question is if there will be significant drawbacks to using adaptor plates (V-mount to AB gold mount) all the time?

Would it make more sense to convert the sled to AB Gold mount? I'm not entirely sure what that would entail. Simply taking the V-mount plate off and putting on a gold mount plate?

I have seen operators running with adapter plates as their default system, just get a couple of backup plates just in case.

Look around you what people are using, it's always good to match the type of batteries they are using.

We are V Mount for all of our stuff. However, we keep V-Mount to AB and AB to V-Mount adapters in our kit.

 

The first one is in case we need to borrow or rent AB batteries.

 

The other is in case an AB person needs to rent or borrow from us.

Whats wrong with IDX?

Well everyone on here seems to come to the consensus that ABs are the best choice given their tech, customer service and almost universal availability. On top of that there seems to be drawbacks in the V-mount design based on some of the posts in this forum (wear on the contacts).

I'm not against getting IDX batteries but I have less experience with them. Endura 10S? Is that the best battery they sell? That is at least what Tiffen seems to be selling.

This is my first sled but I have a feeling my batteries may out last it.

I contemplated going idx a few yrs ago...then (thankfully) I used a bunch of gear on a show that was exclusively v-mount. The batts performed fine...when they stayed on the equipment.

Well I disassembled the battery mount on the Artemis and it looks like I should be able to swap the V-mount plate out for a QR Gold plate in terms of sizing and screw mounting holes.

Anyone have any experience in this sort of swap? I haven't seen the back of the Gold mount yet and I'm wondering if its going to be straight positive to positive, negative to negative wiring or is it going to be more complicated....?

Curt Schaller, Developer of the Artemis, gave me this answer for you:

 

changing from one mount to another is not a big deal.

Basically the Artemis is fitted to work with AB mounts.

to use V-Mount or PAG, we offer adapter brackets and the needed screws.

The change is about 30 min incl. soldering action

V Mounts look cool, and should work fine, but if you bump them in just the right way, they'll fly off. Well, I better re phrase that. It happened to me on a live show on an Archer. Nothing wrong with the batteries, just the mounting system, Even on Sony cameras with the V mount I've had them come off when running after someone.

That's why I decided to go with Anton Bauer batteries on my sled. I really don't like to V-mount system, I've had batteries flying off as well. I heard goof things of PAG but never used them.

I have Anton Bauer battery mounts on my sleds, and own a pile of AB / GlobalMediaPro AB mount batteries.

Never had a single issue.

 

The only catch with that is ... nearly all rental houses here in Australia are running only Vlock batts on their cameras

(all but 2-3 i can think of). So we also have adapters, which work great for the most part and are my get out of jail free card.

 

When I upgraded my sled with the Pro gen3 battery rack, I got both AB and Vlock mounting plates for the base and the fact

I can change them in seconds is one of the things I love most about that base. The adapters are ok, but can still give more vibrations etc especially after a bit of use over the years.

 

If I want to run productions batteries and not my own, in a pinch I can no matter what mount it is.
