Premium Members Charles Papert Posted January 27, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 27, 2014 Is the new zoom branded Alura or something else, Eric? Any info on it out there? I hadn't heard of it until now.

Premium Members Eric Fletcher S.O.C. Posted January 27, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 27, 2014 Yup is the 9.5 to 19 rectilinear Ziess what's really cool about it is any light or ping in the corners is a perfect circle not a rounded rectangle like the 8R. It's a VERY cool lens. When Bill Bennett saw it he was literally jumping up and down
Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted January 29, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 29, 2014 another reason according to Arri is "space", the 2 pin fisher took up to much space in the housing and was replaced by the 8 pin, it makes sense when you see it in person....cost of doing business, tax deductible B) The whole splitting current over multiple pins thing just always bugs me a little. If one pin breaks or the wire to one pin breaks you are suddenly carrying more current over the other pins than they were designed for which can lead to fun things. That may be why they went with 8 instead of 4 so it will be less of a jump in current if it happens. May be a reasonable design tradeoff to get it to fit in a smaller space but that combined with having to solder 8 instead of 2 pins when making up a cable just makes it seem so un elegant which is not what I think of when I think arri. ~Jess
Premium Members Eric Fletcher S.O.C. Posted January 29, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 29, 2014 Except Jess, it's better for Arri to use multiple pins for internal power distribution. So while it may I inconvenience you it's a better way for Arri and it helps to make the camera smaller
Premium Members Thomas English Posted January 29, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 29, 2014 I dunno Eric. I asked why Arri went with the fiddly little fisher on clm4 and was given same reasoning for ages. Finally found out from an engineer that it was just cheaper. Absurd. I've had them break twice now. I wouldn't put this past them simply trying to get costs down. Thomas
Premium Members Benjamin Verhulst Posted January 30, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 30, 2014 Possibly flying the Amira prototype next week - ARRI Burbank's trying to get back to me, but does anyone have the new power connector pin-out? Would love to avoid on-boards or a mess of cable through a 3-pin XLR adaptor. Thanks, Ben

So while it may I inconvenience you it's a better way for Arri and it helps to make the camera smaller How does it help with internal power distribution? Are they really having different power pins go to different things? Don't see how that really helps anything and it has the potential to lead to slightly higher voltage drop/power loss. Using multiple pins for to get the same amp rating in a smaller connector makes sense, just has the problem I mentioned before. ~Jess

There are other connectors that use the same concept (Red One and Epic/Scarlett come to mind as well)
Premium Members Jens Piotrowski SOC Posted January 31, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted January 31, 2014 Regardless of the reasons, Arri would not change the standard 2 pin Fisher connector, if they wouldn't believe it is for the better of the product.

Premium Members Thomas English Posted February 1, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 1, 2014 Jens, You have a lot of faith in Arri. A faith I lost over those cheap CLM4 motor connectors.

Premium Members John E Fry Posted February 1, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 1, 2014 I had a play with an Amira at Leavesden last week & I have to say it's the first large sensor camera I really felt was comfortable on the shoulder, and gave me confidence to shoot like I would with a 2/3" ENG camera, especially with one of the new Fuji/Arri zooms on. Loved the EVF, loved the weight distribution options, loved the lens. If only it was 4K...
Premium Members Lars Erik Posted March 7, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 7, 2014 $40K Oh man. I had hoped that they had lowered the price more. It will be a way tougher path to go now to convince producers to go for this camera. http://www.hdvideopro.com/blog/editor/2014/01/arri-now-taking-orders-on-doc-style-amira-camera-priced-at-39999.html
