Probably need to replace batteries...

Hi guys,

 

most likely I'll need to replace my IDX PowerCube series batteries on my rig. I've had them for six years, and they don't last enough on a job anymore. I'm having them considered for recelling, but in case they say it's not worth while doing this, I'm asking for some advice here.

 

I have V-lock system on a Ultra2c rig.

 

I mostly fly RED and Alexa and ENG cameras. Haven't had any jobs on the F65 yet (as I understand, this camera is quite power hungry). I usually power BOXX HD-SDI T/x and a Arri, Preston or C-Motion FF.

 

I'm considering either the IDX DUO-150 146Wh 14.8v, and by an off chance, a Global Media Pro. I've had little experience with these, except and occasional ENG job.

 

GMP have a series called Li190S, 190Wh and 14.4v. I'm no Steve Jobs when it comes to batteries, so I would appreciate any info any of you battery nerds may have.

 

If you have any other tips on other batteries, I'm open for suggestion.

Hi Lars,

 

Thank you for using IDX batteries and considering the DUO-150. The DUO-150 is a great battery for your rig and the cameras you fly. The DUO-150 can handle 10A/120W draws just like your PowerCube batteries.

The main differences you will notice between IDX batteries and cheap copy batteries are quality and performance. IDX battery cells are balanced and come from the same production lot; this results in superior performance and longevity. Many cheaply made batteries contain cells from multiple production lots and are not balanced. This can create excessive heat, especially in high draw applications, which can lead to damaged battery contacts and damaged equipment.

The Power cubes (IDX packs) are able to be Re-celled with one caveat; during case opening it will suffer some

cosmetic afflictions and will not look as pretty as before but will function like new.

 

And yes, replacement cells that are used are from the same batch and impedance is checked/matched (any reputable pack builder will do this) and the fine electronics are reused.

Custom tabs are used which replicate the original connections (it is just impossible to acquire OEM parts).

 

Choice of Repair/Re-cell will be an individual decision based on financial or upgrade paths.
