Tight hip and knee pain

Hey All.

 

First off i would like to say I am new to this forum and love how much great information it has. I currently fly the clipper with a pro vest. I noticed that after a day of shooting my right hip (Socket block side) feels really tight and my right knee hurts. I cant collapse the pro vest enough for it to go over my hip bone (i have lanky legs and small upper body) Im assuming this is causing the hip discomfort and am hoping that is causing the knee to hurt.

 

I am setting up some physio appointments but was just curious if anyone has experienced this knee/hip pain before

I used to get some hip pain from running the waistband too tight and having jeans or a belt underneath it. That was a great PRO vest that over the years had gotten out of fit for me or I had gotten out of fit for it.

 

Something else that will surely help you no matter what would be yoga stretches everyday. You don't have to get into the spiritual side of yoga just take what you want from it. My yoga instructor knows my hips give me problems and she gives and gave me home exercises to loosen up the hip area. I don't remember the name of it but there is a muscle that wraps from the inner thigh around through the hip to the back of the waist and that muscle is right under where the vest waistband sits and we tend to smash it in there. The knee could very will be a result of the hip and favoring that side since one body part tries to compensate when another it out of balance.

 

Some of the girls at Jumbos can show you some great exercises for you hips as well; that's how Ron Baldwin keeps his battered body in the game. ;-)

The sartorius runs down the inner thigh....the rectus femorous down the front of the thigh, and the tensor fascia lata (connecting into the IT band) on the outside. All three attach at or near the protruding top front ridge of the hipbone (a latin name that translates to "top front ridge of the hipboe"). All kinds of important nerves, vessels and muscle attachments are right there under the waistband at that one point.

 

Once I had an experience of my leg suddenly giving out with extreme pain and inability to bear weight. Fortunately just after the last shot of the day, but I had to ice it all evening to be ready for the next day's shoot.

 

Since then I have been diligent to not wear a belt, to make sure that the waist pads have not shifted, and to not wear the waistband too tight.

That is the one that gives me problems I knew it sounded like a "latte" but could not remember the exact name. Not stretching thoroughly and a too tight waistband was the problem.

My 2 cents. I had similar issues because I was operating leaning to far forward and essentially compressing or shortening the IT band. Next time your in the rig try turning the top screw on your vest so it goes out by a few threads forcing you to lean back. Helped me.

Buy a book called "Becoming a Supple Leopard" by Kelly Starrett, get yourself a rumble roller, a beastie ball and a supernova when they re-release it.

Read it, practice what you feel is relevant to you and enjoy a healthier, more flexible robust body with shortened recovery times from exercise and hard days at work.
