F55 Remote start -stop

Hi everyone

Could some one tell me the pin outs for the Hirose 4 pin on the F55 so I can get a start /stop cable for my Preston as well as my BFD's .

This would be great news that creating a simple cable is possible. What I have heard thus far, is a microprocessor is required to do the triggering and not simply a control voltage switch.

 

The fellow at Shooting Machine does up these microprocessor/cables for the F series cameras and hooks them through pistol grips for shoulder style shooting. As in here...

I've been making cables with no microprocessor and so far no one has said it didn't work so I think a plain cable is ok, unlike the RED Epic.

Yes it is simple and works (for Preston too). The bonus is that you get power from the same connector so it can be a combo cable. I think the current limit is about 2amps, but spread across the 2(?) Hirose plugs, so sometimes it may not be enough juice depending on the stiffness of the lens or other accs running. So far it's been fine for single channel.

 

Another thing to watch out for is the same connector is on the panasonic ENG cameras (HVX3000, etc), but the pin outs are not the same and you risk frying the camera it the Sony cable is used.

I did get this from a friend of mine (thanks Brad) who owns a F55 so be carful when using this cable .

"Re the Hirose power out/record trigger plugs: Like all Sony's NEVER plug into or pull out of the Hirose when the camera is Powered up, it can blow the board very easily.

Here's the catch with the F55……. The SDI output drivers are on the same board as the Hirose plugs, so if you blow the Hirose, you can blow up the SDI output drivers as well!!! Luckily the F55 has 4 SDI outs, so you have some alternatives, but not an ideal outcome.

Along the same lines, there have been some instances of camera's having blown SDI drivers by being hot swapped into the SDI plugs!

The SDI drivers can be damaged if there is a (negative) voltage spike on the SDI ground circuit. The instances where this has happened have been with SmallHD DP6 and TV Logic 5.6 monitors.

Sony are looking at how to address this, but to be safe don't plug into or unplug from the either the Hirose or SDI plugs with either the camera or monitor powered up."

Anybody know if these F55 4 pin Hirose are pinned the same as the older Sony 4 pin Hiroses like on HDCAM's and Panasonic SDX-900's? Been googling but haven't quite found an answer yet.

Am I right to believe that if I order a Bartech Analog Run cable for the F55 and label it accordingly, that neither pin 1 nor pin 4 would be used therefore never being able to "FRY" anything?

 

And as I understand it, most every Hirose 4 Pin connector which is used as a Power Out on a Camera is 1 GRND and 4 12V POS.

At least the Sony broadcast shoulder cameras are Hirose Female connector 1 Unregulated ground and 4 12V Unregulated.

 

Anyone have this cable for use with their Analog Bartech and F55, and how do they like it?

I have spotty luck with SONY R/S cables. I've found a lot of it depends on firmware. There are no settings to enable, Sony just decided to enable it at a later date on some cameras. Yesterday I had an FS7 that worked perfectly, plug and play. I've had some F55's that worked and some that didn't. Some XDCAMS (the ones from Pilgrim that I used with you Ozzie) didn't work until a certain firmware version.

 

It's the most hit or miss thing, but you're never in danger of frying anything. Sony is pretty consistent with connector pin out in my experience.

 

Sony's Broadcast cameras will have the same Hirose but they use the R/S pins as a tally trigger/light
