How cool is THAT?! (except, uh, for the stealing-from-GB's patent part). Fun to see Panavision in the 70's! Would that have been Tarzana?

The final feature I operated in 2009 was for the estimable John Carpenter, for whom this tests were presumably mounted. He hadn't directed a feature in over 10 years at that point. He referred to my rig as the Panaglide for a week or two (I even pulled a Teddy and wrote out "Super Panaglide" in my best approximation of the PanaFont and stuck it to the monitor) until I finally felt compelled to point out that the device he was referring to was long dead and gone.

It was pretty great to work for a director who created part of the vocabulary that we still use today.

I hate to see people's ideas getting ripped off...especially so blatantly (Garrett has some really funny stories of the Panavision people sneeking peeks and pictures of his gizmo). In the end the rights went to the guy who deserved them and it did force innovation and keeping up. I think we'd all still be flying 3A's if people like John Seitz, John Russel, Paddock/Emmerichs/Haarhoff/O'kane, Churchill, Ulland etc didn't innovate and modify and come up with better ideas which not only became what we have today but the new ideas were integrated into CP's (later Tiffen's) rigs to make them better. Back in the early/mid 90's CP finally caught on when all people wanted from them was an arm, vest and gimbal and were getting their sleds elsewhere. I believe Garrett wanted to move forward and keep innovating all along but was held back by the corp.
