Upgrade to HD / SDI monitor on Flyer 24LE

Hi,

Anyone have any suggestions to replace the SD monitor on the Flyer 24LE?

What i'm real curious about is what you do with the existing cable with mega-connector on the end that normally powers up the monitor and provides the video feed.. you guys hack this apart and add your own connectos - or pull it out completely and re-fit with your own cable and new connectors?

Any insight would be great.

Cheers,.

Theres a few posts about this already, but they're kind of old AND I've actually just done this to my Flyer LE.

Yes, the cable through the post DOES work for HD-SDI (my techos didn't think it would, but I proved them wrong - thanks to others

here on the forum who said it worked!!). Just may need to change the BNC connector at the top and obviously add one to the bottom.

We chopped the "mega connector" off and put a BNC for video and a 4pin xlr for 12v power to the new monitor.

If your new monitor doesn't have a 4pin xlr just add what ever power connector works with it.

I added the Marshall 6.5inch Transreflective screen which seems to be working great with the rig. And is much better then the

crappie monitor that came with it.

Hope it helps!

James I'm thankful for your post. This is what I thought but you know its always good to check what others have done. I also heard that the cable would work for SDI signal, however I found a guy in the USA that builds very thin SDI cables for me to custom length, so I am thinking to go that route.

As for chopping off the mega connector, I think that is he best solution. I'm worried of course if I ever sell it someone will say "It's been hacked apart so it's only worth $5 now... lol)

I love the Flyer LE, it fits a very wide range of cameras.

Hi Dennis,

Daylight viewability is probably a major consideration for you in choosing your monitor. If so the monitors get relatively expensive even at the lower end. A few of us who either have a Flyer or a Zephyr have gone with the Marshall 651STX 3G-SDI. Nebtek has the Solar HD. I just checked the Nebtek line and it appears they have a newer version of the Solar that maybe priced right. Not sure as their site isn't coming up at the moment. At the higher end you could be looking at Cinetronic or Transvideo but the weight of these is most likely too much for the Flyer in terms of getting the rig to balance.

There is a Marshall 7" that some people are using but I don't have experience with it and it doesn't have the daylight viewability of the 651STX.

John E Fry, has a Flyer LE for a new monitor.

I also want to see the pictures, each customization is very interesting for everyone.

Just my two cents.

That looks very neat Louis, good job!

I used to regularly fly a Flyer before I got my Zephyr. Of course it only had the junk SD monitor, with that DIN(?) plug feeding it both power and video. You can fix this problem non-destructively, if you're adamant of preserving the original state of the rig. Simply find a female for the power/video cable for the DIN plug, and then extract, from the respective pins, the power and video sources into what ever connector interface you need - I had a bullet plug for power, and, of course, a BNC plug for video.

I'd love to post a photo, but I don't think I ever took one, and obviously I haven't had access to this particular rig since I've had the Zephyr.

Also, I think there was always some instability somewhere along the signal path - most likely in the adapter cable itself that made a digital signal very unreliable. I was glad to see that idea worked in theory at least, and judging by your own solution, in practice as well, just depending on the workmanship.
