Garrett said he spent a small fortune working on the fiber optic tube only to discover that it was horribly disorienting and it really made a lot more sense to have a screen so you could see where the hell you were going. At first the screen was up top so you could look forward towards the scene, but then he decided that down below made a lot of sense so that you could note where you were walking.

Stephen,

Not a bad idea. Perhaps a history Topic. I'm sure there is someone closer than me (Australia) who has copies, but if not I could send them over. There is some great reading in them.

Macca

Ian,

Thats a great idea. So the question is does anyone here have a collection of the old Steadicam letters that they would be willing to lend/send to Tim Tyler, or better yet convert them to whatever format is forum friendly so we can start a history folder?

Didnt Erwin say he was working on having the archived AOL folders added to the site? It would be great to keep all that info together, along with some of those great photos from the Erwin collection! What do you think guys? Tim?

Look out guys...

The Steadicam Letters are a great resource, even though most of the information is out dated, a lot of it still applies... I have multiple copies of the 16 Issues run ( Spring 1988 until the last in July 1995) and still refer to them once in a while. There are bits and pieces scaddered over the internet...

BUT:

Please respect the Copyright laws...

The Letters are Intelectual property of the Steadicam Operator Association (SOA). I would ask Jerry Holway, Mike O'Shea and Garrett for permission (Even if it's only out of courtesy), before just going ahead and scanning all the Letters, also they are already working on that, so save your time and scanner...

Actually as Brant Fagan mentioned earlier in a post that I just found (The new Post function still does not work for me, many many posts just don't show up as new...) that the SOA is looking for volanteers to archive and help out...

As for the AOL Folders...

They were all ereased and are gone for good, nobody owns the rights to them so they are favored nation (is that the right expression???) anyhow I have Folder 1 through 10 (starting around March 1994 until around 98 and 99 with some scaddered random posts, the last couple of months wre lost in one of my early Computer crashes) I also have some left overs from the short lived Steadicam Weboard.

AOL #2,3,4,5 are there in electronic form the others I have to work on... when I have more time... Imagine that, I'm actually working in the moment...

More to come....

How did that post turn into a discusssion about Steadicam letters...???

Anyhow...

Garrett on Shinning (~1980) with the model 2. The feature was the reason for the development of the model 2 as Kubrick wanted a lot of low mode and the Model 1 with the monitor LowMode conversion (One shaving mirror) didn't cut it... Also they where using Kubricks personal BL's.

Check out the LowMode / Tilt Plate on that BL... ages ahead of it's time...
