Hello all, since I was looking to upgrade my current IIIA gimbal to a new model, I´d like to know the difference between the different models due the different price range. The outside gimbal, all looks more or less equal but, what do different a gimbal from other? Precision and better bearings help, but for example, It´s much better a PRO than a ULTRA gimbal?? Both are made with good tolerances and materials? Why PRO has better reputation than Ultras?

Or, for example, I saw in Ebay a PROGEAR gimbal for $800 and looks like a PRO (OUTSIDE). I suppose that a $800 gimbal couldn´t fight with a $7000 one, but, the near 10 times in price difference is worth the money? It´s 10 times better the PRO?

At the begining I thought there are a little brands to see but now there are many of them: PRO,STEADICAM,SACHTLER,CHROSZIEL-RIG,XCS,MK-V,BAER-BEL.....

Your experiences could be interesting before purchase one. Any recomendation?

Hi Manuel. I can speak about my gimbal... Ultra2 gear. For me is perfect and rules ok. I used few time PRO gear and it gimbal is great also.... Every op./owner have a difficult choice...

I´ve an Ultra2 for one year and a half, and I haven´t any problem with gimbal part....

I've had a PRO gimbal for going on 11 years now. I love it and it would take a lot for me to consider getting something else. It works perfectly and I've never had a problem with it. It can hold any camera I've put on it.

That being said, I agree with Amando, every operator will have a different oppinion. However, there are some gimbals that are better than others. The PRO (to use a car analogy) is like a Ferrari. There are other modles (Porsche, Lamborgini, etc.) that are also good.

I can address the bang for the buck question though. You do get what you pay for. In terms of quality, capability, service, etc. That's not saying other less expensive gimbals are not good, just saying that my PRO gimbal is one of the pieces of equipment that pays my mortgage, it is a very important piece of equipment.

Hope that helps,

mm.

Hi Manuel,

I agree with Armando and Mike. You should try the gimbals. If you happen to live in CA, you can check

out George Paddock Inc. and try the PRO Gimbal.

It is a great pice of equipment and I really like it. (Even if I have a Sachtler Artemis Gimbal)

So happy new Year!

Ummm, no. The pro is a VERY different design. The original CP gimbal was for a .75" centerpost and used thrust bearings on the yoke spindle. The CP model 3 gimbal is closer to the modern gimbal but still very different from the pro gimbal.

look at the dates when the pro gimbal came out. If I remember correctly Cinema Products was coasting with the 3A sled and had stopped selling the 3A gimbal all by itself because they knew folks were putting them on George's and Bob DeRose's new wonder sled (which came about from operators trying to improve CP's design -- CP wasn't listening). George had to come out with his own which happened to be a HUGE improvement over the 3A in every way. It is still a benchmark for precision and smoothness and is so simple to service it's almost comical.
