I've yet to have a problem that couldn't be resolved with enough emails and phone calls. I get delays for sure, but I always get paid. As for legal action, for sure never threaten it, instead regretfully promise it, gets them right into action. As for burning bridges... over unpaid work I don't see the issue, I don't want to work for them again. But in that situation it would not be me who burned the bridge, it would be them.
