Ali Torkzadeh
Hello, I could really use advice on getting my first steadycam. I am a total beginner to shooting video with dslr. I will be using this for shooting in the Middle East in streets and among strangers, so having a an inconspicuous profile is important to me. I won't need to shoot from unusual angles. Just something I can hold nonchalantly and walk through the bazaar. I've seen very cheap options, some even under $50 that claim to support my Nikon d5200. but the price seems suspciously low. Like Vidpro SB-10 sold by B&H. (this textfield does not let me paste anything so I can't post the links). Would you recommend any low-budget one for a beginner to get started, preferably under $150, that is reasonably solid and provides a low profile? Thank you in advance. Premium Members Andre Perron SOC Posted February 21, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 21, 2014 My opinion is that the Steadicam (or any other stabilizer) isn't this option you are looking for. Whatever they try to do to "blend in", a steadicam operator will never be inconspicuous. In the stabilizer world, the cheapest cable will cost even more than your whole budget. I am not kidding. A simple monopod would be perfect for you, your arm being the "stabilizer". Good luck, be safe.
Premium Members Lars Erik Posted February 21, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 21, 2014 Hello Ali, as Andre stated, keeping a low-profile with a stabilizer, or when filming with a d5200 or an iPhone for that matter, is near to impossible. People will notice you. Can't think of anything that will fulfill your needs. But I have seen some ok shots made with a Glidecam XR-2000. They cost $300 USD though. Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted February 21, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted February 21, 2014 Hey the only thing I could think of that could work is a Merlin. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/839957-REG/Steadicam_MERLIN2_Merlin_2_Camera_Stabilizing.html This stabilizer is Han held, giving you some stabilization, you can later decide to invest in the arm am vest to carry heavier DSLR on it. It is above your budget but it is the cheapest thing that I would consider to buy in the stabilizer world. The cheaper copies in eBay and else will break in no time or not function properly. Stabilizer aren't cheap but that's because they require good materials and manufacture to function properly. All the best.
Ali Torkzadeh
thank you for all your feedback. I think the merlin would do well. I meant not to be hidden, just not carry something very big. thanks again.
