Whoa! Whoa! Whoa! Charles!

You're not getting out that easy! We've yet to discuss your past romantic relationships, operating skills or your propensity to indulge in a laundry list of pleasurable activities! Plus, you need to throw us a sympathy token of some sort so we know you're a martyr!

My Teradek 2000 has bigger balls than yours!

Back on point here, after a week of use the Bolt 2000 has performed flawlessly. Both interior and exterior. I guess for $8k it better. Wasn't too far from the receiver but did place it purposely behind concrete column and a wall to test the capabilities. Never lost reception. Like

Also flying the Bolt Pro (for AC's monitoring) in close proximity to the 2000 on top of the camera/rig at the same time and no interference issues between the 2.

Hello fellow bolt 2000 users.

I have a question about initial connection/pairing times with your units.

I'm getting 1min 30sec initial connection times.... however, frequently 2 3 & 4 min times are not unknown for tx and rx to connect.

I have no 5.8ghz stuff floating around in my workshop or indeed anything that I know off within 500 yards so this is not the issue.

My unit does show the searching graphic so whether an update would resolve the connection times I don't know. (unit supplied in feb)

Observing the rf output from the tx, (using wi-spy 5.8ghz & laptop) nothing occurs on that score until a minute plus goes by.

I'm wondering if the the first minute is spent sniffing the 5.8ghz band looking for free frequencies and then the pairing begins for the next 30 seconds.

The worrying aspect about all this are battery changes .... production teams aren't going to be best pleased on a live/recorded gig if no pics emerge whilst battery changes can take 2-4 minutes.

I am located in the UK so maybe that aspect is a consideration for the European speced teradek 2000 units.

A further question, after battery changes how far from the receiver can you be (assuming another pair of hands available to reboot the receiver power for resyncing the units. i.e. could you be 400ft away and still able to reconnect.

I have no queries about the overall range as to date I have been pre-occupied by connection times.

I approached Ralf of Teradek at the london BVE exhibition but had no response from an email I sent after the event and my queries direct to Teradek have also remained unanswered.

I would like to see a way of pre pairing the units and that they remain paired even after power broken and remade.

Apologies for the long ramble but my experience not great in respect to syncing the units up ......

During use and temporary loss of signal I have no reconnect issues, all remakes quickly.

The bolt pro 2000 are beautifully made and look the part and I can thoroughly recommend this aspect.

Over to yourselves now for any issues you may or may not be having.

kind regards

phil nixon

Hi Phil,

I don't know how we missed your email but I brought it up to everyone in Support and Sales so somebody should be reaching out to you very shortly.

Let me quickly respond to some of the issues you have with our system:

1. Amimon, the chipset manufacturer, only gives us access to a specific set of features on the chip. This applies to everyone using their boards. We've already spoken to them multiple times about the length of time it takes to boot and sniff the freq spectrum. We are still awaiting an update to cut that time down.

2. This also goes for the system power up/down and manually selecting a frequency. We are doing our absolute best to get these things changed as quickly as possible. Since we are not a semiconductor company and do not own the Amimon chipset intellectual property, we cannot simply go in and fix this as we would normally do with products like our Cube.

3. The distance limitation in how far you can be for a reconnect depends on the backchannel and whether or not the TX can communicate with the RX. This varies based on environment, interference, and other issues.

One thing to note: even if you don't have any 5GHz traffic, 2.4GHz can sometimes affect your transmission. This is especially evident if you have a 2.4GHz remote on top of or near one of our receivers or transmitters.

As for the other wishes, all I can say is that NAB is just a week away. I think you're going to very happy with what we have coming out.

If you ever need anything else, feel free to reach out to me on this forum or by email: Mike (at) Teradek (dot) com.

Mike

Good to hear from you re connection issues and following it up with the chip manufactures.

Would like very much to hear how the connection thing works and how the back channel fits into all this as I don't see any rf activity for the first minute of powering up.

Could you talk me and others through what is occurring on power up to better understand the issues.

It is true with my own tests there is a certain amount of 2.4g activity which is a little worrying given the venues I would want to use the unit in,.... Just hope this is not another issue waiting to raise its head.

My Boxx system doesn't seem fazed by 2.4g but it has a 10-15 sec connection time from cold so never had to think about 2.4g as problematic. I wonder if filtering at the rx front end needs looking into here,

Looking forward to your nab announcements shortly, although for my needs, multicasting (if its arriving at nab) not a feature I need although willing to be persuaded !!

Keep up the good work the bolt pro could be a boxx killer very easily with some sw mods..... keep hassling the chip providers !

regards

phil nixon

If history is any guide, we are frequently impressed by various transmitters' performances at NAB, citing the large amount of RF activity at the event as something that would weed out all but the most kick ass wireless kits. Then, we'll get the same devices on a practical set, only to have them not live up to the performance we saw at the convention. I'll handily admit my ignorance when it comes to the science of wireless technology. As a layperson observing the phenomenon, however, perhaps other wireless devices in the vicinity is not nearly the hinderance we think it is. Perhaps a large open hall, even with its wireless activity, is no match for the concrete canyons of New York City, or a party scene with 100 extras densely packed together.

I won't be making it to NAB this year. For those who are, and for those who can play with a few of these things, put them through their paces. Mount it in a non-optimal place on the camera, or even on the bottom of the sled. Have someone hold the receiver close to their body or in their lap - as a director might. Put a plastic bag over one or both as you might have to if it rains. Tip a stripper with one and see if it survives her throwing it across the room.

Have fun!

Phil,

To be fair, I don't know each step the system makes while connecting, but our Support team would be happy to explain that to you. Shoot me an email and ill make a personal introduction.

Most 2.4GHz traffic isn't going to affect the Bolt Pro 2000; that'll only occur if you sandwich a 2.4GHz TX or RX on top of one of our units (think how MoVI operators use their remote while attached to our receiver).

We will definitely keep on top of Amimon to get some of these annoyances ironed out.
