Hey Guys,

I may take the course that happening in May in PA. However, I was thinking about how much would it cost if I get Steadicam leading more towards high end Professional and also if ever get low budget one. Is anyone out there that has good suggestion for beginner wants go professional and prosumer?

Thanks!

Adam,

Start by going to the workshop. There, you will be able to play with all types of steadicam products. After the workshop, I suggest making friends with other operators in your area and see if they will let you test out their rigs.

You have many options but as a newbie, it’s hard to decide when you don’t even know what you don’t know. Start with a lot of research on the forum, go to the workshop, then go from there. Just a warning, you are entering a world of never ending spending.

Hey Adam,

I would recommend holding on with your purchase, instead, go to a workshop, read this forum from cover to cover and also two important tools that you should get before anything else is the The Steadicam® Operator's Handbook http://www.amazon.com/Steadicam%C2%AE-Operators-Handbook-Jerry-Holway/dp/024082380X and The Steadicam EFP Training DVD http://www.steadicam.com/steadicam_efp_dvd.html These two references are must have and you will find yourself going back to them even after you bought your rig.

Steadicam is similar to playing the guitar, you can take a ham and pretend you play for a while but if you get serious, you will need some lessons and learn about the basics of physics of the tool. After a bit of training you will then know what you like and dont and you will get pickier on the kind of instrument you like to use. Same with Steadicam.

Steadicam is expensive and such a big purchase shouldn't be taken lightly. As said before, look around your area and contact some operators to see if you can meet or talk.

Hope it helps,

Fly safe and welcome.
