The key is a schottky diode rated for enough amps(your looking for upward of 10) with a low voltage drop. I used http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/STMicroelectronics/STPS60L30CW/?qs=%2fha2pyFadujZxjIWIY2dLgpJjceBTCJptGlBs2%2ftjJH8LDu%252bgt5GzA%3d%3d which is completely overspeced (2 30amp diodes in a package) but has a very low voltage drop.

Keep in mind that if you put a meter on a schottky diode you may still read a voltage going the wrong direction. This is the tradeoff for a low voltage drop, but its only enough of a leak to confuse you not to have your batteries charge each other.

Thanks for all the help. I'll be placing an order on Digikey this week.

Tuomas, what do you mean by isolating it? Are you just reaffirming that the diode needs to be on the hot lead?
