Premium Members Alan Rencher Posted March 29, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 29, 2014 Does anyone have a part number for the proper diode to install in a battery plate? Any help will be much appreciated!
Premium Members Jarrett P. Morgan Posted March 29, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 29, 2014 I use a Schottky diode, MBR1645 http://www.onsemi.com/PowerSolutions/product.do?id=MBR1645I have some extras if you need one.
Premium Members Jess Haas SOC Posted March 29, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 29, 2014 The key is a schottky diode rated for enough amps(your looking for upward of 10) with a low voltage drop. I used http://www.mouser.com/ProductDetail/STMicroelectronics/STPS60L30CW/?qs=%2fha2pyFadujZxjIWIY2dLgpJjceBTCJptGlBs2%2ftjJH8LDu%252bgt5GzA%3d%3d which is completely overspeced (2 30amp diodes in a package) but has a very low voltage drop. Keep in mind that if you put a meter on a schottky diode you may still read a voltage going the wrong direction. This is the tradeoff for a low voltage drop, but its only enough of a leak to confuse you not to have your batteries charge each other. ~Jess
Premium Members Tuomas Viitakoski Posted March 30, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 30, 2014 Another tradeoff is that most of the batteries don't have regulated outputs so you may notice the low voltage error on the camera or monitor faster than you've used to. And if the sled's electronics have rectifiers and/or possibly too small gauge wires the drop will increase.Remember to isolate it electrically from the ground and use a proper heatsink - with high amp loads it'll generate some heat like regulators. The rectifier Jess linked is a very good dual common cathode rectifier. Premium Members Alan Rencher Posted March 30, 2014 Author Premium Members Report Share Posted March 30, 2014 Thanks for all the help. I'll be placing an order on Digikey this week. Tuomas, what do you mean by isolating it? Are you just reaffirming that the diode needs to be on the hot lead?
Premium Members Tuomas Viitakoski Posted March 31, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted March 31, 2014 Alan, yes just reaffirming -I was kind of writing my post for the inactive participants as well who might do the same mod as you :)
Premium Members Andy Johnson Posted April 1, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted April 1, 2014 Thanks for that guys. I was just looking around for this, I've just changed my Ultra 1 24v batt plate to 2x12v Vlok so I will be getting these.
