Alessandro Ugo
If on a film I was both dop and camera operator (and some cases steadicam operator too), should I specify, for example on a portfolio or a showreel, that I was both? Hope the question makes sense.. Cheers
Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted June 18, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 18, 2014 Some would say yes, but I subscribe to the "jack of all trades, master of none" mantra...as do many producers. Smaller projects I can see this being an advantage, but not sure I would have a reel with everything on one
Moderators Janice Arthur Posted June 18, 2014 Moderators Report Share Posted June 18, 2014 Allesandro; i have found that if you give the DP, who is presumably reviewing your reel, something else to look at like lighting when you want them to hire you for Steadicam or Operator then they forget to look at the operating. Presumably they also know you DP from your resume so don't include it on that reel. Its easy enough to make two or even three reels these days even if they're some of the same shots on each. If you're in the room at the same time too if you say make some comment 'I only had an hour to light and shoot that.' as some form of explanation to fill a moment in the conversation the watcher, turns to you and listens and also misses the very thing you want them to watch. As hard as it is don't distract them at the time of watching. Good luck. Janice
Alessandro Ugo
"jack of all trades, master of none" This is basically the main reason why I asked. I don't want people think I show off my skills. I will soon start working on my new '2015' showreels, and I definitely want to have more than one. The "problem" is that I am still on a stage of my career/life where on each shoot I work on different roles, from being director to DP to 1st AC to Camera Operator. Nonetheless I am focusing on DPing/Camera operating and Steadicam Operating, so these two categories will be the ones for my showreel. Do you think it's a good combination? Premium Members William Demeritt Posted June 18, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted June 18, 2014 If I were in your position, I'd do everything I could to separate the two jobs. Have a demo reel for your DP work, and a demo reel for your operator work. If both reels should have footage from the same project, so be it. Let them figure it out (or not).
