Thanks for the kind words, Peter. The Dynamo will be shipping starting next week for $65. The first batch will be relatively small, but production will ramp-up subsequently. Here are a few features of the Dynamo:

  • Input Range: 3-30V
  • Adjustable Output: 4-12V, 2A (boosts or steps-down voltage), adjustable with a #0 Phillips screwdriver
  • A wide variety of input and output cables via Micro-Con-X jacks (compatible with AJA Mini Converter cables)
  • Protection Circuits: Reverse polarity protection, over-current protection, thermal shutdown (activates at 165°C), and an undervoltage lockout
  • LCD readout with on/off switch allows you to clearly adjust the output voltage while minimizing light pollution during use
  • Small Size: 2.4x1.4x.8"

Sounds awesome. Just curious why you chose the connectors you did. I'm sure they're cheaper than a Lemo, and possibly take up less space inside the box, but they don't have the most reliable reputation. I'd be willing to pay a little more to have the better quality connections - even if that meant a slightly larger box.

Hey Afton,

Cost is the biggest issue. I like these connectors much more than other connectors in their price range. They're high quality, light weight, and they are weather proof when mated.

Having said that, I can make (and have made) a version with 2-pin Lemo connectors in the same enclosure. That brings the price up to $110 for the regulator. plus the input/output cables are more expensive, bringing the overall cost of ownership up.

I may list a Lemo version on the site as an alternative if you think the cost isn't prohibitive.

Thanks

Alan

If I add a Lemo option, what Lemo connectors would be best? There could be the problem of an AC using a Lemo to USB meant for the Dynamo for another device. Let's say the plug a USB power device directly into an Alexa 12v out without the dynamo.

Should I use a Lemo connector that isn't common? That could mean you have to buy more expensive Lemo cables.

Hey Alan,

What about going with an old standard that most people already have laying around... i.e. Modulus or Canatrans. Most owners still have them and a bunch of cables to accompany, that is if they hadn't unloaded them. Just a thought, that's what I did to my Decimator...

If you decide to use an already common cable, use it with the same specks than what already exist. Not like the 2 pin lemo used both for Bartech and Teradeck Bold with REVERSE POLARITY! Almost fried my BDF because of a adventurous AC.

Another option is to offer an open lead version or to be customized per order.
