Richard James Lewis
Hey guys and gals, I’m sure you who have used 3a/EFP style arms have found that during fast movements and running, there is a noticeable knocking of the elbow joint against the arm sections. This doesn’t seem to be an issue when during walking, but when the speed increases, the problem arises. I was just wondering if anyone had any advice or instructions as how to help prevent this happening. I have thought about removing the rubber bumper screws and replacing them with a more slim line piece of rubber pad, thus giving me a few extra mm of movement to play with, but I don’t know how practical that would be. I know Baer-bel arms have the cross over design that prevents them from banging, but I don’t know if they do an upgrade for an EFP, whether it would be a cost effective thing to do. Do the other Steadicam arms, master and GEO suffer form the same problem, or was it eradicated after the EFP era? I have used a Provid arm, and this seemed stiffer at the elbow joint, but then again, that whole arm is pretty stiff. Thanks in advance for any responses, and I look forward to hearing your suggestions. -Rick.
Premium Members Mikko Wilson Posted September 7, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 7, 2005 The Flyer does this too. ..it also lacks the spring in the socket black used to hold the arm back to the side.. so there's the potential for more knocking there too. (Though it's not normally an issue) - Mikko
Premium Members Erwin Landau Posted September 7, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 7, 2005 No nothing new... Pretty much all the arms do it. My PRO does it. If you run there is nothing you can do, on fast moves I hold the handle tighter and when I arrive I relax the hand. Sound is happy with that. Did that help? Don't know
Richard James Lewis
Cheers Erwin/Mikko, very reassuring. Thought I’d gone and made a major mistake buying the EFP. But hey, if they all do it... Very irritating none the less. Cheers guys, -Rick.
Premium Members Jeff Muhlstock SOC Posted September 10, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 10, 2005 I always added rubber bumpers on my old EFP arm, this helped a bit. Larger bumpers then the ones supplied. Jeff
Premium Members Jerry Holway Posted September 16, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 16, 2005 The new G-70 arm has a trick - really - that keeps the bumps from happening as much, especially at the joint between the section nearest the body and the male socket block... Very rare to hit stops. So, once again, not all arms are alike. Wishing I had 1) more to do with the design and could take credit...can't - it's all Garrett and 2) one.
