Premium Members Victor Lazaro Posted October 25, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 25, 2014 I'm always faced with a challenge when I have to explain what I do to a random person (a muggle). How do you translate the complex mechanics of Steadicam into a single sentence that will let people understand it?

Premium Members RonBaldwin Posted October 25, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 25, 2014 Just say camera operator. You think it's any easier to describe the mechanics of a geared or fluid head? If they want specifics, then go into more detail and describe that you spend most your days (and nights) walking backwards and looking for crafty

Nathan Chapman
I normally explain the arm takes out "translation" - lets me put the camera anywhere in space - and the gimbal ("this bit here") takes out angles and roation - I can point the camera anywhere. Except when they suggest it works by magic. Then it's magic.

Premium Members steve wagner Posted October 27, 2014 Premium Members Report Share Posted October 27, 2014 Ten years or so ago I obtained one of the first release of Segway transporters. Being an early adopter and riding about people always asked "why doesn't it fall over" My first sort of smarty pants answer was 'why don't you fall over !? ', quickly followed by explaining the idea that people stay vertical by deftly moving their feet fore aft left right etc to stay right below their own center of gravity and thus not fall over- and the Segway just copies that idea. Then they would of course want a demo ride, and I always obliged, not always so practical with a Steadicam style rig on your back, but it never hurts to teach a little Newtonion basic physics if both of you have the time & patience.
