Premium Members chris fawcett Posted September 13, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 13, 2005 Is it possible to do a : Step On/Off? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> I doubt it. When riding it, you grip the upright between your thighs. When you want to get off, you must first widen your stance slightly, then step smartly backwards. If there is no one to immobilise the machine, you must now do it yourself, or it will run off like a mad thing. I'm sure someone will be able to manage a step off; but no, it's not straightforward. Premium Members Brad Grimmett Posted September 13, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 13, 2005 , and then the cost, which is ballparked by Frank to be somewhere under $20,000.. When Tiffen begins to sell it, - Mikko <{POST_SNAPBACK}> :P 5 grand for the segway, the rest is for the steadicam brand i guess? <{POST_SNAPBACK}> There has been quite a bit of re-engineering to create the steadi-segway. It's not like they just added a couple of foot pedals and quadrupled the price. It was created for a totally different use than steadicam, and not by Tiffen, so I wouldn't be so quick to blame them for driving up the price for pure profit. The guy that actually created it is European (German I think) and he is trying to sell them for many other uses, not just steadicam. If you want to try to buy one from him directly I'm sure you can get his name and contact info from the folks at Tiffen.
Premium Members JobScholtze Posted September 14, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 14, 2005 No worry's, i know what i am talking about. I spoke with the guy for about 15 minuts on the show, while he was there. And that upgrade with foot pedals won't cost 15000 for sure
Premium Members jay kilroy Posted September 14, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 14, 2005 I spent the weekend at CineGear this summer riding this for Tiffen. It would be damn near impossible to do a step on/step off, but I am sure someone will eventually do it. Just for the record Tiffen did not invent nor create this "Hands Free", Brad is right the gentleman that did is name Rienhardt (sp?) and he is German. He brought it to Tiffen in hopes the would help him market it. So before you go bashing Tiffen on hiking up the price, you might want to think about the fact that these are prototypes and it's kind of hard to tag something without knowing too much on the production of it. Premium Members Jerry Holway Posted September 15, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 15, 2005 All- The Segway was modified by a performance artist in Germany, and he contacted Tiffen with the idea that it might be useful for Steadicam. They've done extensive work to make it quite different, and with Garrett and I and Tiffen, are working to make it much more Steadicam friendly, which also involves testing out various ideas, altering the basic hardware and software... To say the least, it's a blast to ride (20 mph so far, amazing acceleration and deceleration, rig does not fly away, etc.) Working on stepping on and off in shot technique; would use it almost anywhere a western or golf cart or similar might be used. Can be very precise, creep, hit marks, spin. Takes some getting used to to be confident enough to show up on set with it. Price TBD. Strange, I saw my first regular Segway in the flesh today.. happy tourists on the Pont Neuf in Paris... Jerry
Premium Members Jerry Holway Posted September 16, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 16, 2005 Is it possible to do a : Step On/Off? Ari Gertler <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Amazing, we just did a step on and a step off.... slowly, as we haven't made the necessary software and hardware changes to make this easier... but it worked the first time, so I think this tool is going to be really, really useful. I suspect there is going to be some techniques similar to crane step on and offs to keep it all flowing seamlessly. Precision is the key, and we don't want the operating to diminish just because we have a new toy... More as we learn..... Jerry
Premium Members Tom Wills Posted September 16, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 16, 2005 Hey Jerry, are you still in the Philly area? (I read something a few months ago ago saying you were.) If you are, I'd love to see the SteadiSegway in action, as I unluckily couldn't get away from high school to fly to Amsterdam. Oh, and the fact that I don't feel like paying for airfare contributed too. If not, it's fine, I'm just quite interested, as I just finished building my new full rig, and it's gotten me back into operating.
Premium Members Mikko Wilson Posted September 16, 2005 Premium Members Report Share Posted September 16, 2005 Amazing, we just did a step on and a step off.... <{POST_SNAPBACK}> Congrats! I can only begin to imagine the shots! "handsfree up the driveway with the bike, step off as the cyclist sets the bike down and lead them up the front stairs [grip hauls hands-free up into lobby] step back on as the cyclist looks around the large house *very* slowly, then tear off behing him as he runs down the hall when he sees...." .. exciting stuff! - Mikko
